Having trouble finding a good rifle for what I want it for.

Basically looking for something that is
1: compact as possible and light
2: rugged for bouncing around on an Atv
3: reasonable to use for bear protection while checking cams/scouting new areas
4: possibly deer if I’m in the right place at the wrong time.

i have a Remington 700 for my usual deer rifle but I would like something compact and that has open sights or peeps.

i was thinking a kel tec sub 2000 in 40 cal would fit the bill. Or an aero asr 10mm. then the old model 94 came to mind. What do you guys use? Or any ideas?

Since you didn't mention action type, I would suggest a 760 or 7600 in 30-06 cut back to 20" and have it fitted for a Williams FP receiver sight. I've had a couple like this one. It's just about perfect for what you require.

If you're interested in buying a 7600 in 36-06, LMK. :)

Short barrel shotgun single or o/u, sxs that has sights or can be added. Corwin arms had a few years back. Rifle would depend on action that fits your desire

action doesn’t matter so much, well I wouldn’t mind an autoloader if I could think of a short and light one.

I forgot about those 7600’s. Maybe a 7600 police carbine be about it if I could find one for a fair price.

Levers are great, but loading gate is a bit of a pain compared to a detachable magazine

You may be right with the 7600, but my 700 is 30-06 and I got a weird thing against owning multiple rifles in same caliber. 7600 police carbine if I could find one would rock.

With requirements like yours I would be reaching for my Ruger American Ranch in 308, short 16.5" barrel, nice and light with detachable mag. Checks all your boxes.

But I don't like the muzzle brake on it and the mag feels flimsy. Other than that it is what it is, an affordable light and compact rifle.

I also have a 760 Carbine (18.5") in 308. I wouldn't go any shorter than that as the recoil/blast gets to be a bit much.

Also, you will pay a huge premium for the Police version over the std. 7600 and really be no farther ahead.

I have a Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39, a Savage Hog Hunter in .308 and a Tikka Battue in .308. The Ruger has the shortest barrel and lightest weight but has no sights so you'd have to add something. The Hog Hunter and the Battue are essentially the same rifle - both 20 inch, bolt action .308s with open sights but the Tikka wins because of the smoother bolt and because the fiber optic sights are amazingly quick. Also the Tikka just feels better in hand.

The fireball from my Ruger Ranch in 7.62x39 (with 16in barrel) makes it rather unpleasant to shoot. I'm sure it's quite dramatic for those around me though! First thing I've shot that surprised me with the big flash in the scope.

Tikka T3x Battue in either 308 or 30-06. Remington model 7 in 308. CZ 527 in 7.62x39. All are very nice and will do what you ask of them.
