Smith and Wesson M&P my opinion

Maybe there is a high demand for the M&P in the states, with different agencies switching over to the M&P. There are rumors that Canadian Border Guards, Brinks, and possibly the Correctional Service Canada will be switching to this firearm in the future. When I ordered mine I found prices ranging from $650-$849 in my surrounding area, and one dealer actually told me that he couldn't order any due to shortages at his supplier.

With all the talk about this gun right now I don't know what to think, or who to believe. Some people say it is the best out there in its class, and some think it is nothing more than a glock immitation that has not yet stood the test of time. I guess only time will tell, but I cant wait for mine to arrive.

I am looking at mine right now, the latest revision "N".

There is pin in the hole where the lock is supposed to be.The arrow pointing in the direction of Locking/unlocking is there.

SKBY.

I was told my M&P had an internal lock when I ordered it, but I ordered it anyway. When I got it the hole was filled/plugged. Just a mag safety, and I'll see how that goes before I mess with it, but I'd rather not have that either.

The 'pin' you are referring to..is it the lock mechanism? I have a S&W 686 that has the internal lock, and it is a hole with a pin, and the key goes over the pin.

if there's no room for the key it doesn't have the internal lock...esp. if the gun didn't come with a key ;)

S&W made one mold for the frame;, the once that don't have the IL have a pin in place.

Just put the first 100 rounds of 40S&W factory loads through it the other day,the load being Winchester's 165 grain MC,$150.00 + taxes for 500 rounds and must say for a stock service pistol to shoot as well as this one did makes me a very happy camper. The real selling point for this pistol is the revoveable backstrap to accommodate varying hand sizes and S&W has done it's homework here in spades. The ergonomics of this pistol really work for me as my hands are on the smaller side but the reverseable mag button, the ambidextrous slide release and the mag disconnect safety all make for a very well thought design.Although there will be some detractors to the mag safety, namely L.E.O.'s ,I think all in all it's a great design that handles the 40 cartridge with ease as it's definitely not the same power level to that of the 9MM and I personally am gratefull for that as the 9 ' is a great cartridge also but it's not a great defensive round as been proven time again. This platform is a natural for the '40 and will be a great positive for the M&P sales.I just hope that the criminal element out there will not realise this at all too soon or ever for that matter as it's a great tool for the L.E.O.'s and rightly so,legitimate owners and law enforcement only should have these great pistols. My specimen handled and funtioned without a hiccup and digested some handloads quite well also as it's not a very finicky cartridge any more than a 9MM,10MM or a 45 and I've loaded for all of the above for some 30 years now.Autoloader cartridges will function properly provided the handloader uses appropriate components. My hat's off to S&W for a great gun that will no doubt continue to sell very well. Now I have to convince the wife SHE needs one in 45.Wish me luck!

Just picked up my M & P .45 from P and D yhe other day. Was in initially to look at the Glock 21 SF (short frame). Tried the Glock on for size, then the Springfield XD45. The Springfield fit my hands the best of the two. I was lamenting about purchasing the Springfield and I made the comment about S & W's M & P .45 and they said they just got them in. Naturally had to try it on for fit. Left P & D with less money in my pocket than planning on. Love the way this pistol fits in my hand. Sorry 1911 fans, this 10 round double stack fits me as good as a 1911 single stack. LOVE IT. Can't wait for days off to go shooting the new toy.

Very nice review.

I bought one last month with 15rd mags.

It is designed as a service pistol and not a recreational pistol so one has to keep that in mind.

They also have a CCW model also.

I wish I had the M&P 40 when I worked as a LEO.

Just picked up my 9mm last night, will shoot it this weekend, my wife thinks it's a pretty cool gun. She likes the weight and changable grips.

I'm not keen on the magazines being made out of metal, they'll shear off the plastic mag release eventually, I've seen it happen with a Sigma.

The M & P forum has an ongoing thread regarding magazines dropping randomly while shooting. I'm not sure how common it is, but common enough that S & W are aware of it and trying to fix the problem. Anybody interested in the M & P should check out that forum for M & P specific information.

I bought one a month ago and haven't had any problems, yet I guess. I did find though the shells ejected towards my face more then I liked. I am thinking it's just a breaking in period. Still like it very much and so does the g/f which is who I kind of bought it for but then I like it more then I thought I would.

I meant in Canada M&P is $650 and Glock is about $800...(that's why I said 650 vs 800). If you have 12-6 you might be able to find a used G19/prohib for that much... BTW one of the dealers here at CGN has G17 on sale right now for $700.... G19 (prohib) has to be rebarreled to become restricted and only Questar is doing that...his price is $1100 IIRC (check the banner above)

The only time I have heard first hand of this is when reloads have the bullet seated too far out. The mag release is tripped by round in the mag.

I do not know if this will happen with all M&Ps, or just a few. Our training department found this out the hard way by saving a few bucks on cheaper ammo (commercial reloads). Switching to better quality solved the problem.
