So, how do YOU open that 7.62x39 crate???(Crate Opening for Dummies.)

I finally got around to needing to open my crate of Czech milsurp ammo I had lying around. I had meticulously prepared the day I would need to open this by reading many fascinating CGN threads on the subject. Some involving:

- brute strength (Clammy! ;) )
- blowtorch (not sure, but a runner-up to Darwin most likely :) )

The seller of said ammo recommended I use vise-grips and open it like a sardine can. Since I am a girlie-man, this approach seemed doeable for me.

So here is a photo-documented opening of my first crate of milsurp ammo

Requirements:
============
- vice-grips
- permission from the wife to set the crate on the kitchen table tablecloth

STEP 1: set crate on work area and open

STEP 2: unfold rings in corners

STEP 3: lock vise-grips firmly around base of one of the rings
828.jpg

STEP 4: start rolling towards other end
829.jpg

STEP 5: repeat in other direction
830.jpg

STEP 6: repeat once more for third length
831.jpg

STEP 7: admire the nearly opened crate, and wonder why they did not put a fourth strip to roll?? Then used the vise-grips to tear off the last seam

STEP 8: finished! Good as new. Not bad for ammo a year older than I am

I chucked the tin once I got the top off, a helpful soul decided to put his hands in there and within 10 seconds managed to draw blood  So I decided the best place for the remaining tin was the garbage. I re-packed the crate without it for safer future withdrawls :) You would not want to leave a blood trail from the ammo crate if the zombies were ever to come'a'knockin

In any case, I guess since this one is open I had better start looking for its replacement!!!!! CanAm, any news? :p

Proutfoo, are you a surgeon? I've never seen such a neatly opened can of czech. Mine looked like an organ thief's attempt to remove a kidney...

I had found a few of those other threads ;)

The hammer and chisel (although probably very "combloc") is an interesting idea

Toybuilder broke out the hacksaw :)

CanAm recommends the crowbar method, but since my constitution is as it is, that likely would have ended in alot of swearing and little shooting

No kidding. And this is illustrated!

The only thing I forgot to add in the details was to have a band-aid handy in case someone not involved in the opening of the crate decides to stick his fingers inside and cut himself  Less running around by the peanut gallery

ammo cans

The proper way to open these is to put the rings through the index finger and the middle finger and stand on the box and pull like a big pull tab on a beer can. If anyone in combat used vise grips like in the photos you would be dead because you took too long getting fresh ammo.:p

I have this vision of a Czech drill sergeant firing an Vz.58 over the heads of new recruits screaming "Faster, faster" as they try to open those tins with bayonets and their bare hands.

Now that's some fast stickyin', thanks Stevo

:D :D I guess this means I will have to host the images for a while ;)

Also, I get to have the honour of having thread stickied in a busy milsurp forum about me being a girlie-man  :)

LOL, let me know when you're done hosting the images and I'll unsticky it.

Next time, use an axe. Nothing girly about that.:)

Great sticky! :)

:D Since you are predicting a scarcity of 7.62x39, I decided it was time to open this one; it will give me a reason to get another :)

I got this one locally from a great little store, I will probably start saving my pennies to get a second one just in case. Who knew that 30 year old ammo was just blocks away from where I am currently sitting.

I have not yet shot a single bullet yet, but I look forward to watching the sparks fly at the backstop soon :p
