so, what's so great about the 308 Win cartridge?

I bought at least 10 rifles with other calibers to match to my 308.

None of these calibers succeded in detroning the 308 for best all around caliber.
All of these rifles have ended up in the safe, the 308 is still my caliber of predilection.

Calibers i bought to compare them to the 308.

6.5 X47
30 Nosler
300 mag
257 WM

30-06
358

257 Robert

They all shoot good but none of them can replace the 308 for my go to caliber. YMMV. JP.
 
The COVID-19 pandemic just made the .308WIN and .223REM two of the greatest centerfire cartridges ever.
Don't believe me?...just watch how fast bulk ammo and components fly off the shelves as well as quickly disappear off the reloading forum on the EE.
I feel very blessed that I always stuck with these two and made them my preferred platform, even though I have many other caliber/cartridges to fart around with I have never felt the least worried that .308Win lacked anything for my sporting purposes.

Always on the look out to add a BNIB 308 to the herd ( all actions are cool )... They are so addictive. JP.

Not to mention the PGW Coyote, and the HS-Precision HTR, both of which I love. Also, as mentioned above, the SSG3000 (German one).

My go-to deer rifle for decades was an old Remington Model 7,

5 lbs., 4 oz. weight, 18 ½ “ barrel, stock of Kevlar reinforced fiberglass.

Light, accurate (for a lightweight hunting rifle) 1.25 MOA all day long, good enough.

.308 of course!
 
I’m another one that only uses .308.

All 5 of my rifles are .308, and yes I’ve tried numerous other cartridges.. 30 06 6.5cm 6.5 prc 300wm and .270 and I still went back to .308 for everything from coyote to moose and beyond...

Shoot a large bear close range with a 6.5 and then see how popular it is ��. It may have great BC but it’s certainly a bit lacking in the knock down power...

Now i shoot a 165 grain copper round nose bullet at 2600FPS and even my biggest animals bang flop. :)
 
Many of my cleanest knockdowns were with a 308, the fact that this caliber is inherntly accurate often make it easy as shot placement is never lacking. JP.
 
Necro thread! But the .308 Win is pretty solid. Light recoil. Almost .30-06 power. Does well in a short action. Does well with short barrels. Gentle on brass. Lots of high BC projectiles for match shooting. Not too fast to blow up cup-and-core bullets but still expand fully. Effective at typical hunting ranges.

Really, it's pretty great as an all-around cartridge. I recommend it all the time to new hunters and never feel bad about it. Some might move on to more specialized rounds but that's a different discussion.
 
Been using .308 for years now, haven't had a single moose or deer complain about being shot by the caliber.
 
Hunted with a .308 for the first time this year, worked great. That said I’m a fan of tied and true cartridges, classics. I love the .303 Brit and have started thinking about something in 30-40 and 6.5 Sweed, a buddy of mine picked up a 6.5CM a couple year ago and I’ve seen him take a deer with it but I can’t see myself owning one.

To be honest with you I’ve seen better performance out of my Swedes than 308’s. Also your knock down argument is funny. Shot a bear last spring with my 45/70. 325 FXT bullet. 10 yards. Just behind the shoulder, out the other. Took out both lungs, top of the heart. Bear turned and ran 20 yards into the bush. Didn’t even roll it over. Great kill shot, but if I hit the shoulder closest to me the bear would’ve rolled hard, but the bear would not have died as quickly as it was quartering away. Shot placement has to be considered.
 
Something to be said for the 308 with 180 grains as a good intersection of power and recoil with lightweight rifles.

I wish more receivers took advantage of the cartridge size like model 7 or 84m.

Makes it a lot more attractive, 308 in 30-06 length actions is as confusing to me as it is popular. I can understand it from a target shooting c.o.a.l perspective or the perspective of manufacturers as a streamlining and cost saving thing.

I don’t think the legions of dudes who buy 308 savage axis and tikka care about that but for me a long action in those sorts of rifles would make more sense.
