Softening a Norc M4 - Pics of brakes used on last page

Just shot over 1100rds (pretty close to 1200rds actually over the last 4 months) without cleaning. Wiped off BCG 3 times to see what was up, greased and dropped it back in.

No major fouling on the parts - bolt face looks fine, lugs are clean, back of bolt is showing some carbon but nothing I would worry about. Bore looks clean and the gas system is just purring away.

Functions 100%, no serious degrade in accuracy, goes bang everytime. Fired cases are dirty in the body (chamber is definitely dirty) but not affecting chambering at all.

Using a moderate load of WCC735 and even the lower is "clean"

Pretty hard to complain about that...

My pleasure. I got interested in tuning when I saw some videos on 3 gun matches then researched all the neat toys these shooters played with to tame their rigs.

Faster follow up shots, lower muzzle jump, optimized performance for their desired ammo. Alot of very interesting tech.

As I said, I no longer see recoil as a need during my shooting. I know it is a byproduct but I never seen scores improve by having more recoil.

you see, this is why Jerry is respected here, he knows precisely what he is talking about

Jerry, what spring did you use that you found heavier?

I put in a H buffer and it does help but I'd like to see what the spring can do.

I read half the thread then gave up.

yes.223 has very little recoil. however ANY recoil slows down your follow up shot.

In a 3gun match the faster you can pull the trigger and BE ON TARGET the better your score. so why wouldn't you look for any advantage you could get?

Thanks for the info mystic, i may have to try it myself sometime.

it was simply listed as a heavier recoil spring. I think it was by Wolff?

been a while now.

The biggest gains will be in limiting the gas in the recoil system. I tried using the heavier spring buffer and upping the gas to see what would happen and all the recoil issues came back.

The spring/buffer are important and the last parts of the puzzle. gas is the main and most important area to limit.

Keep up the good work Jerry!

Have you thought of getting a JP Enterprise adjustable gas block? ATR sells them and I have been looking at them with interest.

Now you need to get yourself a .22 LR conversion kit like the stainless CMMG kit that Arms East sells and a couple spare mags. These kits are incredibly reliable and if oiled up well enough are good for at least 400 rounds before cleaning and are far more reliable than my 10/22.

thought about an adj gas block but since my gas block can be moved, it does the same thing. Just not as elegant but it will also not move.

No interest in rimfire uppers at this time. My 10/22 archangle kit machine guns as good as the ammo loaded. Soon will have a Marauder to play with so that will keep my high cap rimfire blasting busy for a while.

My norc is a hoot blasting away
