SR22 Rifle Questions

They'd have a hard time keeping them in stock!

I wonder if anyone has ever tried to tap/thread a hogue stock. I would like to run a top rail, but I wonder if the rubber covering would mess with the threading process?
 
Swapped a few parts here and there. The 12.5" bbl is gone to another project, so the threaded 16" is back, as is the triangular FSB. Lower HG rail is new - it is sloped to match the taper of the HG, which allows a more 'vertical' VFG. Eye relief on the C79 clone is very short, which is why its located so far to the rear.

This is a very slick and creative configuration GCD, Love it!

I was out running my 110 round drum along with both my SR builds yesterday for Father's day... little backwards I but taught MY Father how to shoot... we ran 3 different calibre pistols after getting comfortable with the .22lr load... he had a huge smile on his face from the 110 drum, followed by a look of utter shock/surprise from the .357 magnum load (4.2 inch barrel) :cool:
 
TEG - I'll have to break out my survival pack of Pink Cerakote and Hello Kitty stickers to confuse the police raiding party! Because if we're basing things on looks alone, then *obviously* a pink rifle is much, much less lethal than a black one!

LM - that sounds like a great Father's day! I want to get my oldest daughter (7) into shooting, but I have to win over SWMBO first.
 
Scope change

I have found my SR-22 to be a fun and accurate little plinker, infact I was finding the 1-4x scope not powerful enough to take full advantage of its accuracy, so I have added a Burris PEPR mount and a Bushnell AR-22 2-7x scope. This magnification range seems ideal. So far I am very impressed with the new AR series of Bushnell scopes, they seem great value for the money. In fact I was so impressed that I bought a 1-4X scope for my LMT 5.56 to replace the Burris red dot. The no-name 1-4X scope that was on the SR-22 is now on my CMMG upper (which is proving to be a bit disappointing in the accuracy department):

Would this NEA stock fit on an SR-22? I suspect that the SR-22 receiver cover may be too fat to allow the horizontal bars to clear. Has anyone tried this?

I found this picture, I think it is a Nordic Components compact Retractable Stock, but I have never seen one before. I wonder if they are still manufactured?

Battledyne mags are well documented as the worst garbage out there, they have never nor will ever function... Wish it weren't so... But it is... I had $220 wraped up in 5 of them on looks alone, kept one for pics, but sadly it has never dispersed even a fraction of the 25 rounds through it's feed lips, failure nearly every round no matter what you do. I hear the archangel ones are moderately better, but not exactly reliable either. HC3R 25 rounders, Buttler Creek Steel Lips, GSG 110 round drums, are all decent options, nothing beats the ruger mags sadly, however only available legally in 10 rounds today. Welcome to the club bro.
 
I agree 90% with LeadMonkey. Pick one you like for pictures, but only use Butler Creek or Ruger for shooting, in my opinion. I have a much lower opinion of the HC3R than LM, in fact I just sold mine. I have also heard a lot of negative feedback on the GSG drum mags, although I have no first hand experience with them. Now that it has been broken in, my Archangel is actually reasonable reliable (better than the HC3R by a wide margin in my experience).

Several of the really cool looking "AR style" mags shown in this thread have been made by CGN members by piecing together and modifying various mags. Here is an example from gcdavidson:

SR-22 Barrel Length

I got a pm from some one asking for advice on a good barrel length for an SR-22 "SBR" build (which is kind of funny since that was my original question back in post #1). I suggested if you want a full length hand guard like this:

Then you could use an Dlask 8" with 5" +/- fake suppressor, a 10" with a 2.5" +/- Dlask XB-5 Linear Compensator, or a Dlask 12.5" all should provide a similar overall length.

However I recommended the 8" so that you can switch between the full length hand guard and a shorter version like this:

Of course I may be a bit biased :) Does anyone have any other suggestions? I am thinking if weight is an issue, the factory contour 12.5" would be the best bet. Please post pics of other barrel lengths and hand guard combinations especially 6", 10", factory contours, etc.

I like a 10" bbl because it lets me fit some of the shorter fixed stocks and still be over the 660mm OAL. I would think with a 8" bbl, you are looking at => 9" for a stock?

I took a hacksaw to a couple factory handguards, taking the 9" down to about 5-1/4 and 6-1/2. I also chopped some of the rails to fit. I finished the cut edges but they still need a little flat black paint to hide the aluminium. Thinking about a Mission First minimalist stock for this one, and possible some 45* off set sights:

I think it would be good to mention here that flash hiders and cans etc, do not contribute to the length of the rifle as it relates to restricted vs NR requirements.

If you remember our discussion regarding o/a length in another thread.... as long as you have a butt stock (i.e.: it is a rifle, not a handgun) and as long as it does not telescope or fold to less than 26" and as along as you did not modify anything yourself to shorten it, there is no lower limit on o/a length to remain NR for a non-centre fire semi auto rifle. This is the same rule that allows mares leg rifles to me NR. So as long as you are using factory or after market components without modification you are GTG. The rifle in your picture could have an 8" barrel and no butt pad and be 24"+/- and it is still NR.

OVERALL LENGTH LESS THAN 26"/660mm RULES:

CURRENT LAW CC s. 84(1) "prohibited weapon" (d):
If the firearm ARRIVES at the "less than 26"/660mm in overall length" condition by "sawing, cutting" etc., then it is forced into the "prohibited weapon" class. If it left the factory at that too-short length, or arrived at that too-short length by the addition or substitution of factory-made or custom-made parts that are NOT SHORTENED FACTORY-MADE PARTS, the limit does NOT apply. It is unrestricted, UNLESS it is semi-automatic AND centrefire.
