Stag 10 build and range review

CP dropped off a parcel today! 15 minutes later and the Stag 10 is more to my liking. Magpul makes some really good, reasonably prices and usually available stuff.

What are folks using and liking for a muzzle brake / compensator / flash hider? I’ve got a Heathen on my PRS gun which I quite like. I had a Cadex brake on my Cadex and it was VERY effective but I don’t want anything that big on the end of my Stag.

I had a Precision Armament M4-72 on mine that I felt worked rather well. Just swapped it out for a Surefire Warcomp. I felt a flash hider would be more suitable for hunting in case I didn't have time to put ear pro on. I have not yet had the chance to fire it yet, so no comment there.
Your build is turning out nicely.

I can’t see myself hunting with any sort of brake or compensator. Center fire rifles are loud enough as is and I think the added decibels that a brake would produce should absolutely be avoided. Even now I hunt with ear pro on my head and try to slip it on if I think I have a second before taking a shot but that rarely happens. I’m around enough loud noises that I really try to take care of my ears.

The shooting range is a whole different can of worms. Tame recoil is nice but for me it’s all about being able to spot your shots. I hope to plink accurately from 0-600m on the PRS range.

Just got my 375 Raptor dies and 22 Creedmoor SRP Alpha brass. Still need to get a Giraud trimmer and 22 Creedmoor dies. Not sure if I should get Whidden or piece together Redding.

I am also curious about the Lee locking rings, I've always had excellent quality reloads from lee dies.

For the 22 Creedmoor I'd suggest Whidden or even custom ground Forster dies if you are going to use Alpha brass. You can order direct from Forster and you can choose the amount they work the neck, that way you aren't working the neck back and forth to the extreme. I am very happy with my custom 6mm Creedmoor Forster dies and also my Whidden dies.

I will look into the custom Forster, thanks!

Moderators, feel free to move this to the reloading forum.

I’m starting load development for my Stag 10. I picked up some FC once fired brass from Black Sheep Brass. The ladder will be as follows (will probably shoot it at 200 or 300m):

Sierra 168gr SMK
CCI BR2
Brass: 2.00” (seems very consistent)
OAL: 2.80” (mag length)
Varget: 41/41.5/42/42.5/43/43.5/44/44.5/45/45.5

Question since I’ve never noticed this before. When I seat the bullets I can almost see that the case neck is thinner between where the bullet sits in the neck of the case and the shoulder of the case. It’s ever so slight but before I continue I want to make sure this won’t cause some sort of issue.

I’ve done plenty of reloading for bolt guns and some semis (a long time ago) but I don’t want to blow up a new rifle.

Thoughts?

Jube just posted this in the AR15 sticky thread. Sharing it for your delight and creativity.

PRI handguard, ACE stock and Tapco grip.
Front sight could be from MI, ARMS or YHM, not sure.

The front sight is by Yankee Hill, I originally had a more exotic flash suppressor on there but it was slightly big for the bayonet ring.

This would have been a cool build to do on one of the ATRS Modern Hunters, since they retain the side-charging feature and can be chambered in 7.62

Small base resizer? If using RCBS then I would recommend it. I once ran into issues with rounds not chambering until I went to the small base. If you have a 18.6" 1:10 twist barrel, then my money is on the 44 grain varget and up. Starting to push it though at that load.

Some more parts have arrived.

1) Magpul “upgrade” rubber butt-pad. I’m actually annoyed and disappointed with Magpul for the first time. There isn’t really anything special about this thing at all. Especially for 30$. I have Fab Arms stocks that come from the factory with nice, grippy, squishy butt-pads (I don’t like that you can’t eliminate the tiny bit of play on the buffer tube, otherwise they would be my go-to stock). This Magpul “upgrade” is just a piece of plastic. It’s not rubber and it’s not squishy.

2) Strike Industries charging handle. Seems nicely made and the latch is a perfect size. I don’t get what all the rage is about with the Raptors. Unfortunately I’ve never tried one but it seems to me that the size of the patches would catch on things. Are they coated in some sort of fancy polymer to make them slide better?

3) BCM QD point. The only thing that I’m slightly disappointed with Stag is the lack of built-in QD points on the hand guard. I like the BCMs because they are relatively low profile and have no sharp edges. Something built flush into the handguard would have been nice though.

I think I’m done with the arrival of the last two outstanding parts. I’ll shoot the Stag with the A2 style bird cage just to see how it feels then likely swap it out but go back to it for hunting. The 5 slot MLOK rail is all I need to slap on my Atlas or LRA bipods for some load development. One note of caution, the screws that came with the Magpul rail are about 2mm too long and will put pressure on the gas block if I were to instal the rail where I actually wanted it: a half slot forward. I might end up grinding one of the screws to make it work.

Hopefully I get to shoot it before the government decides we can’t have these anymore.

Swapping the muzzle device can impact your accuracy and poi. Just be sure to test it well before hunting.

Well done. Have fun!
