I have a couple of SKS, both Russian. I went full retard with the first one, Crapco everything, and I love it. The second one is bone stock, and I love it too.
Being a tall guy, I much prefer the Tapco stock. It will never be a precise rifle, but it is good enough out to 100 yds. With all the tacticrap I threw on it (stock, vertical fore grip, BC scout mount, and a quality red dot), I find it way easier to handle, and much like the OP, I find the stock irons frustrating to use.
I still shoot the stock SKS and I enjoy it, but the Crapco'd one works better for me. To each his own.
