Stock vs Modified SKS

I have a couple of SKS, both Russian. I went full retard with the first one, Crapco everything, and I love it. The second one is bone stock, and I love it too.

Being a tall guy, I much prefer the Tapco stock. It will never be a precise rifle, but it is good enough out to 100 yds. With all the tacticrap I threw on it (stock, vertical fore grip, BC scout mount, and a quality red dot), I find it way easier to handle, and much like the OP, I find the stock irons frustrating to use.

I still shoot the stock SKS and I enjoy it, but the Crapco'd one works better for me. To each his own.

Sorry for bein so harsh. I was in a pissy mood over Quebec politics and you caught some overlap; apologies.

I guess my point would be that instead of spending money on aftermarket accessories to turn a milsurp with some, if not a lot, of historical value into something it isn't, why not buy a Cz858 instead? You'll get a proven rifle in a proven configuration that'll do what you want your modded SKS to do, only better, for not much more money.

Alternatively, there are Chinese commercial SKSes out there without any milsurp value, and nobody will shed a tear if you mod one of those out the wazoo. In fact, I've got one that I'd be willing to trade for your Russian; I'll even throw in a Scoutscopes.com scout mount and a PLA jungle stock just to sweeten the deal. PM me if you're interested.
No worries. Happens to the best of us and I'm sorry if my response went overboard. I just don't feel any sentimentality towards the milsurp value of the post-WW2 SKS rifle as the only major conflicts it's been involved in were the Vietnam war and the cluster**** in Ex-Yugoslavia, where it held a distant secondary role to the AK in both cases. I might be interested in the trade especially since the range is closing for a couple of weeks.. Gonna PM in any case after work

I bought my SKS just so I had one. Plus as I bought the CZ858 first, I had it all decked out already and left the SKS alone. I think many 'purists' who don't like the Crapco stuff are just stating their opinion. To each their own right?
I think/know the CZ858 is far superior to the SKS but I enjoy shooting with my buddy who has a totally decked out SKS. I never tell him he is wrong because he knows he isn't wrong, just a different style/opinion/ideas/etc.
I always enjoy seeing pics of everyone's gear as it lets us see all there is to offer and we can take what we want from it.
My setup is stock with a bipod and slip-on recoil pad for a longer LOP. The next step for my SKS is tactical rail and red dot.

Winchester94,

Really like it with the red dot, was the bc mount needed to mount it like that? What brand of sight? And how does it function (accurate?holds zero?)

Does anyone happen to have the green or tan tapco stock on there sks?

ET

Yes, it's mounted on the bc tac mount. Easy installation and solid as a rock.
The red dot is a crappy nc star :bangHead: that doesn't hold zero very well
At all. I've heard great things about the bushnell TRS-25, so I think I'll replace
It with one of those.
