image.jpgimage.jpgI had a flash hider installed with set screws and had to remove it recently. I shot the gun with a laser bore sightetd in the barrel! Fyck! When the 3 holes for the set screws were drilled, one of them went through the barrel. There appears to be a hairline crack , starting from the hole and going toward the muzzle, it's about 1/8 of an inch long. The hole is 1 inch back from the muzzle. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks.

So you fired the gun with a bore obstruction ? Any crack or bulge in any barrel means its junk and unsafe to shoot , throw it away and start looking for a new barrel , contact the Keltec importer Vault distribution they might be able to sell you a new barrel . Look at it on the bright side you still have all your eyes and fingers .

If I remember correctly when the su16fx stuff happened they told everyone that they have to send the rifles back to kel tec because you can't swap the barrel yourself. I think someone said kel tec actually broke a few recievers change the barrels.

I could be completely wrong. I hope it works out for you.

your right, just gonna see if Keltec can hook me up with a receiver and barrel.

Sell it for parts and buy a decent rifle.
This time don't mess around having your less competent smith modify it for you just to save an inch of overall length.
Lesson learned the hard way but at least it was a cheap rifle and not a $2000+ rifle.

Good luck on the next one.

I've just ordered a new key mod from wolverine, but I would still like to get my SU 16 fixed ,I had no problem with it. It wasn't the smiths fault , I shot the gun with a laser bore sight in the barrel, and it wasn't just to save an inch, nobody on the island could thread it , because the barrel is attached to the receiver. Kel tec and vault is going to see if they can help,I'm not holding my breath though...lol ... By hthe way I have $1200 into the rifle,so not really that cheap. And 2 lessons learned, threading from now on and no more laser bore sights.:)

I thought in your other thread about this you said the smith drilled the holes for the set screws and it went right through to the bore?

$1200 into a SU-16 is just as silly as $1400 into a T-97. For that much money you could have just bought a better rifle in the first place.

Lessons learned, 1, do it right or don't do it at all and 2, don't leave the laser bore sight in when you shoot.
I never use a laser bore sight and have no trouble sighting in a newly mounted scope but I don't see anything wrong with using one if you pay attention and remove it. You only need it when you are at home anyway just to get it ballpark close then take it to the range or wherever you are shooting for final adjustment.

Good thing you're not holding your breath, if they can get you a new barrel by the time you pay for that and the installation you are going to have $1500-$1700 into that $800 rifle.
I personally would cut your losses and sell it for parts and move on.
I once blew up a new HK USP Tactical with a bad handload and after talking to the shop about replacing the frame including labor it was going to cost almost as much as a new pistol so I sold the parts that were still good with a warning to the buyer as to what the pistol went through and washed my hands of it. He was happy and I went out and bought a Glock 21 for half the price and still have it today. Lesson learned, much more careful with my reloading procedure now and hope to never go through that again.

Good luck

yes one of the three, set screw holes went all the way through , but this did not cause my problem. The bore sight did . I usually only use it at home but I was swapping scopes between two rifles so took it to the range with me( it won't happen again). If Keltec will sell me a barrel and receiver only , for a few hundred bucks , then it's worth it. I don't need the stock , forend, sights, mags that come with the package. And the barrel and receiver is one unit, so no installation required. If I sell it for parts I prob get less than if I reassembled and sold, depending on what Keltec and vault does for me. Anyway no matter what happens, I don't really care, cause I just ordered a XCR-L keymod:). Which rate of twist I wonder?

I doubt either of them will do anything for you other than maybe sell you parts since not only did you shoot the rifle with an obstructed barrel but you also modified it as well which instantly voids any warranty you may have had. With the RFB's they had said anyone who has the muzzle threaded would void the warranty then it was OK to have Dlask do it, not sure where they ended up on that one since I lost interest after shooting mine for a while and deciding it didn't need a brake or flash hider.

Are you asking what twist the XCR-L comes with? Is there a choice? I though they were all 9 twist but they may have started offering a 7 twist. I would like to see an 8 twist offered as it is my preference for my 223 rifles and given a choice will always go with that.
Did you get the light barrel or regular heavy barrel?

the SU-16 has a pencil thin barrel. No wonder they say not to thread it. I got the SU16 when it first came out and tried to AR-ize it because I didn't want to get into ARs. Well that's a mistake that people keep on making. Just get an AR.

I ordered keymod with heavy barrel , because they have none in stock for a few wks, I can still make a few changes, they are going to install a CRT stock and adapter and give me a credit for the OEM stock. I've looked at page , where you can build your own rifle and it appeared you can choose rifling , maybe it's for the m - model only. Oh and I've ordered an S&J linear comp. here's my thoughts on the SU16.. If Ivan get a new barrel and receiver for$400, I'll have the tactical stock conversion kit + Red lion aluminum forend , which is a $450 value. So new barrel receiver and stock and forend, I should get $800 for it .cost me 400 to make $400. Or sell it as is for what?
