Any opinions on sub gauge guns for clay games for skeet, trap, sporting clays. Been messing with the 410 and 28 gauge lately having a ton of fun any opinions on the subject ?

I picked up a Browning Citori Special Sporting clays 3 barrel set (20/28/410) from Guns Unlimited and Ilve it for subgauge clays & 5 stand!!

I have 3, 28ga guns that come with me to sporting clays often. Love 'em and the scores aren't all that different from the 12. Having said that, the 12 is my serious gun. Since I've started reloading, the 28ga also has a big cost advantage. New shooters often have more trouble holding the gun up than with recoil. Baby frame 28 is the answer to that.

I have several 28 ga. that I an enamoured with for clays.
Last year, health issues precluded shooting anything larger than 28, and my scores did not suffer to any great extent.
Nice to load ( and less expensive).
At my skill level, I could not state that the reduced gauge actually caused lost targets. I suspect operator error was a more likely cause.

Thanks for the replies another question what is everyone using in regards to shot size and weight ? The lighter recoil and economics are nice and the scores and breaks are ok also plus a great excuse for my meager talents. only have one sxs a 20 gauge Le Fever 28" nitro it s 85 years old and holds it's own against my o/u and repeaters.

I have been loading 3/4oz in all gauges lately for clays shooting. That weight really shines in the 28 and 410 gauges. If I do my part the target breaks are great but I had to tighten up my chokes LM the most open in 12 ,16 and 20 LM and IM worked in the 28. F and XF with the 410. 8.5 extra hard shot seems to be the winner with that payload for me on the long hard crossing sporting targets.

For sporting clays with the .410, I use #9 in 1/2 oz or 11/16 on the shots inside 30 yards and #8's beyond that. The capacity of the 410 is so little that I like to get as many pellets in there as I can but I don't use #9's in anything else.
The 3" Hull and the Win 410HS wad and 3/4 oz of 8.5 or #9 hard shot and some choke really gives some balls to the 410 .

J808 post has some validity to it My buddy is a great trap shooter and shoots 3 1/4 dram loads all day long and with out the recoil his scores drop. Give him a sub gauge and he has trouble hitting a barn door. Tell him his ammo doesn't hold 1 1/8 oz of 7 1/2 shot and he falls apart . It does happen.

I think your buddy has the classic trap shooter disease. Trap shooters do the same thing exactly, over and over again for thousands of rounds and when you make a change many of them stumble because 95% of trap shooting is in the head! I know lots of guys who are avid trap shooters and do well at it but when they have to step out of the box many of them don't do well so back in the safe space they go. Not all of them fail and I know several guys who take it all in stride but lots do.
