suggest me a 308 rifle

Seriously though if I travel to hunt and/or pay a bunch of money, I always take a spare scope in rings that I have previously mounted and sighted in on that rifle, as well as primary one on rifle. Never had to use it yet, but way better insurance than sights.

thats actually pretty sound reasoning.
not many guns that come from the factory nowadays come with iron sights, and the ones that do are usually crap.

by the time you factor in the cost of a decent set of irons, gunsmith installation, barrel refinishing, etc you could have bought a quality 4x scope instead. with any weaver/picatinny mount or Ruger rifle you can just tip the scope off and replace it. few shots to zero and youre set.

If I was buying a brand new rifle these days I'd be looking pretty hard at the CZ550 FS if you're an iron sights guy. But I have a Savage 99 in .308 that I got off the EE that I'm pretty happy with.

Ruger gunsite scout.

My requirements for a hunting rifle were:

Stainless steel
308win caliber
Iron sights along with a scope, not for backup but dual use
Short action
Detach mag
Short and light

This gun covers them all, it's also built like a tank and weighs a tad under 7lbs. It's a $900.00 gun, so you have to be pretty sure you know what you want before you buy it. It shoots about an inch open shoulder with factory ammo.

I also have an m305 setup to hunt, it's not bad:

7.62x51 or 308win (Chamber cut to 1.639)
Chrome lined 22 inch barrel with flash hider
Detach mag
3-9x40 scope with backup garand sights, can use both on the fly
10lb gun
Fibreglass stock

This gun you can get into for less, a lot less if you just buy one and don't scope the thing. One other gun to consider is an Enfield No.5 they make awesome bush guns. I also have a Parker Hale .303 that has iron sights and every gunsmith knows how to drill them for a scope, should cost about $50.00-$100.00 depending who you deal with.

I dunno about the Ruger Gunsight. Comes with the large mag and not quite sure what else. For a brush/bush gun, you want a rifle which will not get twigs, brush, etc. caught up on it. I picked one up and looked at it seriously and imagined trying to walk through brush with that mag and such. Lots to get hooked up on.

Besides, does one really need a 10 shot mag. If you look at one, pick it up and wiggle the mag. Now imagine in willow/brush country when those branches brush against it. Nice hollow ringing sound it makes and the mechanical "clicks" of that thing wiggling would be great advertisement that you are there. May as well just hang a bell around neck instead.

I would suggest that there are a wide assortment of rifles available which would fit your bill. I can't tell you which ones, you have to decide for yourself. You had another similar post last week. Now it is up to you to go try some, and see which fit you and your thoughts.

The Savage 10 FCM Scout comes in 308. It is basically your 200 with a 20.5" barrel, accutrigger, accustock, detachable clip, ghost ring sights, scout scope base. It would fit the bill nicely

The ruger also comes with a 5 rd magazine. And if thats still to long for "gliding" through the bush , Ruger also makes a 3 rd mag as well. Stock is easily adjusted for your length of pull, you can mount a scope in two different positions, comes in stainless, laminated stock.

thats what my grandpa said. he had a 400 doller scope on his rife no iron sights he went up to hunt elk for 10 days. his scope broke when he was sighting it in and had no back up sighs or any thing like that. ended up he wasted a 7 hour trip. thats why i want iron sights and i am a irons guy. not a huge fan on scopes.

Take a look at Leupold LX mounts, if scope goes South, just instantly dump it off and use irons.

I have that setup on a .375 H&H so I can vouch for reliability and repeatability of your zero when remounted.

Cheers

hello, im looking to get a better deer/brush gun. my current deer rifle is a stevens 200, which is a nice gun but im looking for a little bit better gun. i want it to have a quality set of back up irons just incase im in the bush and my scope fails.
thanks.

CZ rifles are very well built, and accurate. They have nice iron sights, and the receivers are made for tip off rings, so you can put your scope on and off easily and fast.

Ruger 77 is another choice, and with good iron sights, and scope rings for taking the scope off and on.

Most of the larger gun stores have them in stock, and they appear here on Gnutz used from time to time.

if your going to use it in fowl weather i woud go with a synthetic stock, wood is gorgous but can swell in extreme weather, also choose which action you pefer, bolt, lever, pump, semi, or break action.all have there pluses and minises, if your carrying all day weight is also a factor.my new personal favorite is a rem 700tacticle acc-sd.its a lazer out of the box, short 20 inch barrel and has nice balance for tge heavy barrel, and priced in the 600s. try different rifles and see what fits youmy eyes r pretty toast and i have to now shoot with a scope.im still in love with the savage 99f .there was one on here wuth tip off mounts, the average about 450 here but in the us they r between 1200 to 2000 on gun broker, that tells you something, peoole charish them almost like cult status

Parker Hale 1200 or Model 88 Winchester. They both come with factory open sights.

But if you seriously like open sights find a rifle with peep sights on it. There durable and good for all weather hunting.:D

Find an older M77 Ruger with irons in the EE or get a Browning BLR as others have mentionned. Also, Trade Ex (above) has Husqvarna's which are very decent rifles as well.
