Suggestions for a "big and slow" caliber?

Not going to read 30 plus pages but, if it hasnt been mentioned, a 375H&H with 235gr bullets at 2500 fps is pretty effective and in a decent rifle is pleasant to shoot .... and like most weights of bullets in a .375 is pretty accurate.

I think the OP had it all figured out in the beginning with a 9.3x57 husky Mauser. It’s worth noting that the small ring 96 Swede versions are wonderfully lightweight and trim rifles. Don’t feel like you are compromising anything because of the low price either. Handloading will give good improvement over the anemic factory loads.

Alternatively I’d go with the .375 crowd and take the bigger financial plunge, I wouldn’t bother with anything in between the two though.

Actually moose are not at all hard to kill effectively with a plain old 30/06 with 180 grain bullets given his maz range of 200 yards.
I think his idea of large bore rifles will lead him to something he will not use much if at all, and doubt he has had the experience to realize this.

If getting tremendous use from a hubting rifle was a qualification for ownership, I suspect most hunters would be one rifle men.

^^^ I changed my settings once, then changed it back the way it was. I found it annoying scrolling all the way to the bottom just to find one or two new posts.

I agree, so I went with the 25 posts/page as a happy medium.

I used to use the same setting as you , I found it inconvenient and went back to my current setting , what ever floats your boat .
There is a small blue cirlce with two small arrows left of the thread title which will bring you to the latest unread post in a previously read thread. That or you can click on the blue square next to the user name under the "latest post" column.

Thank you! This ^ is some useful info, which i have managed not to discover for myself in over a decade on this site. :)

9.3x62. Great caliber, on the slowish side with 286-300gr bullets, 2200-2450, which is the criteria you gave. Not bad recoil. Pick up some PRVI/PPU ammo for $29 a box (At Tradeex last I bought) and then reload the brass after. How slow do you need to go? Dial them down if you want slower.

Excellent caliber. Zastava make a nice Mauser chambered for 9.3 x 62.

That’s a looker, nice rifle.

Thank ye fer that. She be a good shooter with hardcast and is a "sail through critter" device & long bomb delight on distant objects to 800 + yds. Kentucky windage is the rule here. I bedded 'er right & added a Timney trigger as well as brought down the rear sight a smidge to get my pet load to be dead on at 80 yds.

These be beauty rifles to carry through the bush due to their light weight. Sweet handlers they are.:d

My dream hunt is one of the pink mountain bison. I have a 30-06, and I could borrow my dads 7mm rm, but I want my own bison gun. As much as I love my 45/70, they might be farther away and I’ll appreciate the range :)
