Big and slow caliber says 45-70 GVT to me.
Big and slow caliber says 45-70 GVT to me.
Got a rehabilitated (by me as a winter project) Remlin 1895GS that shoots 405 grain Woodleigh Weldcores into a big ragged hole at 100 yds.
Remington sells a great kit gun that you can turn into the semblance of a Marlin after several hours of deburring, fitting, finishing, polishing.
All stuff Remington should have done at the factory but didn't.![]()

Heck of an interesting thread!
The 35 Rem will not provide you with the energy you will need. It only carries 1100 ft lbs to 100 yards. OK for deer and smaller black bears to that range. Have a Marlin for my wife for camp use and as a saddle gun.
As much as I love the 375 Win, it only carries 1000 ft lbs of energy to 200 yards. I have taken numerous moose and black bears with mine over the years, but the longest shot has been 120 yards.
.
the 375 winchester is one of most intriguing caliber. while hunting in europe i even see in our group a guy using a double side by side express in that caliber .... it worked great on wild boar and red deer.
the cartridge was making a lot of disccusion while the 9.3x74r or 9.3x62 not at all ...
A 38-55 on steroids.
Owned one for about 6 mos that I bought used.
Traded that 94 for a vacuum cleaner.
No joke.
Still have the VC.
Depends on the Expectations of the cartridge in the first place!!
i think alot expect too mch from it for what it is, but if you look back on its history, it does exactly what it was designed to do
yes- i am biased on the cal, i have heard it #### talked to much in aus when i purchased mine at around 18 years old at the time.......... sayin it was 'useless' on sambar and the fact everyone who used it was just spray and pray on Pigs............. an thats what 30-30s are for.. in good hands the 375 winnie is the 45-70s little cousin![]()
