Suggestions for a "big and slow" caliber?

I have two boxes of 30 cal 210gr Nosler Accubond Long Range on the shelf was planning on loading them in my 300RUM but thinking I'll try some 30-06 loads for my 22" barreled T/C Prohunter should easily get 2550fps = medium slow thumper...

You might as well shoot some cheap cup & cores in that rig and save the AB's for the RUM.

I load and shoot .588 BC 200gr Accubonds in my 300RUM @ 3200fps I'm good out to 600 yards with this combo I do not practice further = 2" high at 100 yards is 12" low at 400 yards which is why I haven't loaded the .661 BC 210's for it yet which would be 11" low at 400 yards not enough difference to spend the time working up the load.

So these bullets are just sitting on the shelf either I load them in my 30-06 or try them in my old 308 Norma Mag which is parked since I bought the 300RUM or I sell them.

Been thinking about trying them in the 30-06 for several years now would make a fantastic thumper combo zeroed @ 200 yards they are 2.2" high at 100 yards and will be only 8" low at 300 yards can't beat that for a 300 yard thumping combo.

I load 165gr Accubonds in my 30-06 now.

Big and slow caliber says 45-70 GVT to me.
Got a rehabilitated (by me as a winter project) Remlin 1895GS that shoots 405 grain Woodleigh Weldcores into a big ragged hole at 100 yds.
Remington sells a great kit gun that you can turn into the semblance of a Marlin after several hours of deburring, fitting, finishing, polishing.
All stuff Remington should have done at the factory but didn't. ;)

LOL good humour...

I have a 14" and 22" barreled T/C Contender carbines and a JM Marlin 1895GS all in 45-70 I 100% agree... There just so many other options out there though...

14" 45-70

22" 45-70 now has a Leupold VX2 1-4x scope mounted

My 1895GS (18.5" bbl) has a Leupold VX-3i 1.5-5x20mm on it and all the WWG retrofits as well as the Brownells cowboy action spring kit..
Great crystal clear optics and the Leupold adjustments are really accurate with the VX-3's and over.
Those 45-70 Guide Guns I found to be very accurate.

So did the OP ever end up getting something big and slow? Or medium and slowish?

I don't know if it was ever mentioned but if you want to try and experiment with big and slow, if you have already have a 12 gauge shotgun of some kind, with either Brenneke, Challenger or the Federal vital shok deep penetrator slugs the 12 gauge will let you have a go at it. It really doesn't get any bigger or slower than a 3/4" x one ounce chunk of lead moving at ~1550 fps.

I have been thinking about this topic for awhile now too and I think I will probably end up with either a 9.3x62 from Trade ex or the runner up I'm considering for SS is a 375 Ruger guide gun but more $$. But I can get a new Zastava 9.3 and a case of ammo for about the price of the 375 Ruger. But then again SS is nice for here in BC and the Ruger can sling some pretty serious loads if you load your own for it. Choices, choices.

Heck of an interesting thread!

The 35 Rem will not provide you with the energy you will need. It only carries 1100 ft lbs to 100 yards. OK for deer and smaller black bears to that range. Have a Marlin for my wife for camp use and as a saddle gun.
As much as I love the 375 Win, it only carries 1000 ft lbs of energy to 200 yards. I have taken numerous moose and black bears with mine over the years, but the longest shot has been 120 yards.

.

mate- this makes me fuzzy inside! Is there by ANY chance you have some sort of PHOTOS or this Cartridge, Rifle and Said Killed game???? I would love to see some!!
can You PM me Your reply and maybe some kind of short storys to accompany a few of the kills? terrains, distances, performance of cartridge.....
each Yr, I fall more inlove with my 375 Lever!!! almost to the point i was so close to trading my 9.3x62 T3 on a Marlin 375 winnie scoped mmmmm

Was your rifle scoped? or Win model 94BB?

No leverguns are as smooth and slick as a well tuned 336/1895 action and those slicked up Remlins with the WWG trigger upgrade and Brownells cowboy action spring kit installed are really accurate.
I polished the throat and chamber in mine and it almost cycles itself.

the 375 winchester is one of most intriguing caliber. while hunting in europe i even see in our group a guy using a double side by side express in that caliber .... it worked great on wild boar and red deer.
the cartridge was making a lot of disccusion while the 9.3x74r or 9.3x62 not at all ...

A 38-55 on steroids.
Owned one for about 6 mos that I bought used.
Traded that 94 for a vacuum cleaner.
No joke.
Still have the VC.

My favorite big and slow cartridge is a 535gr bullet at a mild 2250fps out of my .500 Jeffrey.

It still has 3900 ft-lbs energy remaining at 200 yards and 3100 ft-lbs at 300 yards.

I also have a .444 and .375 H&H but they collect dust now.

Depends on the Expectations of the cartridge in the first place!!

i think alot expect too mch from it for what it is, but if you look back on its history, it does exactly what it was designed to do :)

yes- i am biased on the cal, i have heard it #### talked to much in aus when i purchased mine at around 18 years old at the time.......... sayin it was 'useless' on sambar and the fact everyone who used it was just spray and pray on Pigs............. an thats what 30-30s are for.. in good hands the 375 winnie is the 45-70s little cousin ;)

This is why I like my 14" 375JDJ T/C Contender carbine so much there is nothing it can't kill out to 200 yards just need to find time to get a scope onto my 21" 375 Win barrel and work up loads for it.

This is an article that I read years ago that got me to start looking at my first 375 T/C Contender carbine in 375 Win.

WhelanLad,

Very nice rifle and harvest!

I am not sure on how, or if I can post pics here, so will PM you for e-mail address.

Can only think of one pic of an 18 1/2" black bear (skull measurement) harvested with my Marlin 375S, scoped with a fixed Leupold 2.5 power scope mounted in quick detach rings by same manufacturer. Will look for others. A great rifle that will never be sold, and passed on to my daughter, or any children she may have.
Most memorable spot and stalk hunt with the Marlin 375 Win was a Woodland Caribou at 100 yards. I also shot a wolf with it at 40 yards.
All of my hunts with this rifle for moose and bear have been here in northeastern BC's boreal forest (Peace River region), that can be fairly thick where these animals live.

I have owned the Winchester '94 Big Bore in 375 Win a couple of times previously as well, but foolishly sold them to others looking for saddleguns for bear protection. I have recently acquired another one with nice wood that is unfired and still has its hang tag, but no box. I have a Williams peep sight from another Winchester that will be mounted on it.

Tried a load of RL22 with the 210gr Accubond Long Range in my 30-06 55grs gave 2430fps 56grs gave 2490fps in my 22" barreled T/C Prohunter.

I was very surprised that the 56gr load gave me a less than 1" 3 shot group at 100 yards only problem is with a 1 1/2" high 100 yard zero with my 165gr Accubond @ 2900fps I'm hitting over 12" lower with the 210gr bullets.

Unfortunately due to this zero difference I can't switch between the two loads so won't be loading the 210grs again until I've used up all my 165gr loads but when I get to them these big - slow 210gr bullets @ 2490fps will be awesome for anything I aim at.
