Suggestions for a "big and slow" caliber?

For clarification is a 458wm firing a 300 gr Hornady hollow point at 2600 fps considered a reduced load? It's pretty close to max if I remember and a fraction of the recoil standard loads offer. It's my deer load if I ever get to use it for deer

It's hard to imagine that of all the hunters commenting on here trying to compare recoil of various rifles fail to realize that most shotguns kick harder when firing slugs or buck shot or turkey loads. Seems no one really complains about shotgun recoil. I find they kick much harder than most rifles I've shot. Including 458 wm

The mild 35s or 9.3s would be a small step up over the 270. I don't know if they'll kill any better but I prefer bigger bullets at average velocity and haven't been left wanting

I'd hazard a guess that not many shotgun shooters bench test much, which is where recoil matters more. Even the toughest among us doesn't enjoy being nailed by heavy recoil hunched over a wooden table soaking it all into his shoulder.

Mate I toted my Ruger #1 303 brit yesterday with my Son, I'm guna say another Vote for 303 especially a Number One platform, if a 303 doesn't float the boat with a 215gr Woodleigh, then a Ruger #1 in your choice will be nice

Im too much of a rookie hunter to trust myself with a single shot. Lol

Plus the no1 isn't exactly a cheap gun... Gorgeous, and very capable - might have to get one in 45-70 or 9.3x74r one day, but not quite what I'm after here.

Good chance I'll just end up with another bolt gun, but I've seen some decent prices on some 35whelen pump guns, that could be interesting... I never liked the BLR before this thread, but the fact they come in 358win and are a lever gun (don't have one of those yet) has piqued my interest too.

Fair enough Suther,
I too thought along these lines early on, until I hunted with the Single shot, follow ups arnt as fast but are not mch slower than my Technique of being a Lefty with RH bolt guns.... it adds that element of, hit its once hit it hard..

I too havnt had the BLR but same story, would like a 358 or something similar, not the old school lever but a lever none the less.

Well , after 31 pages , I'll still stick with my 358W . The 35 Whelen in a Jerkomatic is also very cool though . I've got a very early 760 in 06 that I'll never part with . That being said , a BLR in 358 would be a very handy , and capable rig . Don't get me wrong , I like the big stuff , but I think you have the same thing in mind as I did , I really like my 358 ........... and now some one will recommend a 404 Jeoffreys no doubt lol .

I can't believe how many people haven't changed how many posts appear per page. It's only page 4 for me...

-Top of page click on "settings"
-Left side of screen click "General Settings"
-Scroll down and in the drop down menu select "100 posts per page"

For the longest time, I never cared about it. One day I was going through one of the laugh-you-lose posts and got tired of having to change page every two seconds. Now I can't believe I didn't do it sooner, threads like this are so much easier to read through quickly when there are 10 times as many posts on the same page...

^^^ I changed my settings once, then changed it back the way it was. I found it annoying scrolling all the way to the bottom just to find one or two new posts.

In the "Lightweight" setting of the mobile app, it automatically returns to the last post viewed... scroll down from there.
