The magwell was the trickiest part so far. The stick mags fit in a slightly curved recess in the mag well which has to be exactly the right depth, make this slightly too deep and the bolt will catch the back of the mag. I almost screwed up with this. I decided that it was almost deep enough and I checked a mag depth with the bolt in place only to find that if I had gone any deeper the bolt would catch the mag. ( lucky this time, but I will be double checking everything way in advance with everything else.) The bolt strips dummy rounds as it should. I really needed five hands to check this, it's difficult holding everything together in the right place while pushing the bolt down the tube with a finger.

Stick mag in the well..

The drum mags are a different thing altogether, these rest on the rims of the magwell and are held in place by the fillers back and front. Mine is slightly high at the moment but it seems work well at this hight. I will leave it until the gun is finished before making any adjustments. If I have to drop it down a bit later it will not be hard to do as the rims are accessible when the gun is in one piece.

No work done on the Suomi today as I went on a firearm verifiers course, it was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. The instructor was George Frazer of the Firearms Technical Analysis Section, he is real a gun nut ( has everything ) and he also makes his own guns. Naturally I had a good long chat about the Suomi, and the prospects look very good indeed, but I will have to send it in. He tells me it will be three months until I get it back.

Looks good with the sten MKII as well, even better than the Suomi.:)

+1. Frazer is a great guy, on our side and definitely knows his stuff. I was kinda surprised to hear that there are a lot of gun nuts on the technical end.

Try a PPsH41 or 43 next! :D

Either would be nice to do but I can see a couple of problems regarding these. Firstly what is the reciever/ frame, the lower, the upper, or both ? It would be good to get this clarified before starting.

Secondly how do you make a semi auto without installing a striker trigger mechanism and closed bolt on the 43 ? I think it can be done on the 41, but it would be difficult to make it non easily converted with that tripping bar so accessible. I don't want to make anything that only resembles the original in outline, as far as is possible I want the real thing. Anyway it's your turn next. :)

Front filler support next, this looks straight forward enough but it's taking longer than I thought it would.

Still too high, will take this down tomorrow.

Got the front filler support finished all apart from the two pin holes. It will be hard to get the holes in exactly the right place so I think I will weld the filler to it instead.

Barrel alignment tab next.

As can be seen I don't make mistakes.

I only wish that were true. Got careless with the dremel, should be able to fix it though.

The barrel is held in place nice and tight by the barrel jacket, but I'm not altogether happy with the 1/8" gap I have between the feed ramp and the chamber. I don't really know what to do about this, or even if it's important, I will ask for advise south of the border.

you could probably build up the 1/8" gap with weld and dress it back to fit with a file.

Or you could make a nicely fitting piece of steel and silver-solder it on.

What I will probably do is screw it on temporarily until test fire. I can then make adjustments if needed. What concerns me more than anything is why I have the gap at all, it should not be there. Will have to do some measuring.

I figured out why there is a discrepancy and it's nothing to worry about. I have welded the filler support to the reciver. I put the gun together as far as is possible at this stage, put a dummy round in a mag and let the bolt fly down the tube for the first time, it chambered it fine. I'm going to work on the trigger housing next.

Emailed the Technical Analysis people today with the specs and a load of build photos. I recieved a call within five minutes from another tech section gun nut that actally has his own Suomi M 31 !! Everything is going nice and smooth.

Recieved this email this afternoon......

..Thank you for the information that you've provided regarding the firearm that you are building. I have assigned this information to a firearm technician for review and I will be able to provide you with a firearm reference table number sometime in the near future.

Have a nice day,

I'm a very happy boy :):)

looks good! hope they pass it for you

BUT find out if they consider the shroud a "reciever" part as if they do its a converted auto right away no matter what mods you have done......

Death of the happy switch.

Trigger housing and components, the blocking bar yet to be installed is on the tigger housing.

Cut in the housing to gain acces to weld the bar in place.
