Based on how they have sometimes looked at the AR15 and it's Varients all they would need to do is swap uppers between and 550 and a Swissarms and see if they fit/function. Then again the AR18 and AR180B contradict this line of reasoning as they can swap uppers and one is prohip and the other is non-restricted. If the Swiss lower was the registerd part then this precident might have been used but they (who I don't know?) saw fit to make the upper of the swiss the registered part so I don't know if the AR180B example could be used to help. And to think of it now, perhaps the AR180B is going to be reclassified as a result of the swissarms mess.

Writing stuff like this comparing the SA to other rifles is what the RCMP will use to pick their next target. The issue is with the Swiss Arms lets not expand the problem.

How did this thread avoid closure? Until there is something factual to post we need to relax and write letters to MP's and the PM and stop posting speculation on here. This isn't helping anything.

The RCMP have been given the information package they have asked for, and it is now on them to make a decision based on that information, from what I have seen, things are looking good. Have some faith, the people who put this package of info together for them were very thorough, and very determined to do it right. Now we play the waiting game, and as some have stated while we expect a decision within a couple weeks, we are prepared to wait much longer as we all know how the RCMP can drag their feet.

I have looked at the detailed (exploded) diagrams of both the 540 and the 550. I also compared those with the diagram included in the manual for an early SAN and, for the life of me, I can't tell the difference between the 540 and the 550. At least, the uppers that are the "legal" receivers, look identical to me. Now, if the dimensions of, say, the bolt carriers are different and not interchangeable, I cannot tell. So there may be some dimensional differences otherwise the actions are the same. To complicate matters even more, the manual of the early SAN that I have seen from a friend out in BC lists the rifle that it describes as 550 and 551 (the carbine version). Now, I am not saying that the SAN is not based on the Sig 540, since the 550 is also a variant of the 540, but how does one tell them apart? Is the lower that makes the difference in some way but the lower is not the "firearm" in Canada. I hope someone can make sense of this and the SAN owners can keep enjoying their unrestricted rifles.

Ok - bear with me on this one ....

1. The Swiss Army didn't like the 540 - so sent it back to SAN with a list of required improvements
2.San strengthened two areas of the rifle - the mag well and the area behind the bolt (to withstand the recoil better)
3. SAN sent the improved 540 back to the Swiss Army - now calling it a 541
4. The Swiss army accepts the 541 and give it their own name - the Stgw 90
5. SAN changes the name of the 541 to 55x and sells this family of rifles commercially (LE, civilians).

From the exterior, all three of these rifles are gonna look the same (with the exception of very minor differences - pins / stamping bulges to make room for the auto trigger group).

So what are the RCMP LIKELY now considering?

Well the only real difference between the 540 and the 541 (which is the Stgw 90 and the 55x family) is that strengthening SAN did at the request of the Swiss military.

So what SHOULD the RCMP be considering?

Our Classic Greens, Black Specials start out their lives just like the Stgw 90 and the 55x - on the machine (think original mandrel) that was built to make the original 540 !!!!!!!!

Now, correct me if I'm wrong (which I'm not) - but our laws state that a rifle's lineage begins with it's inception - and our precious rifles start out as a 540.

Now, the 'powers that be" may not like the fact that our rifles are pretty similar to the 55x, but when everything is said and done - our rifles really are a variant of the 540 (but of course so is the Stgw 90 and the 55x - but that is not our concern).

I think we're gonna be Ok - it may take a court battle, the issue may be splitting hairs - but we definitely have a case.

There is no point. As soon as there is any real information from the RCMP it will get up on here pretty quick.
