Swiss arms / SAN rifles FAQ

Swiss Arms conversion?
If you have a short restricted version and want to turn it into non restricted, is it doable? Gas system and barrels, can it all be swapped? Difficult? Easy? Gunsmith? No gunsmith?

Any info appreciated.

Yes this can be done. The barrel, gas tube, piston, gas valve, hand guards, and sometimes the front sight need to be replaced. A special jig is needed to avoid damaging the upper. Headspace has to be confirmed/adjusted with the new barrel. I would strongly suggest against trying it yourself unless you have the special jig. I have seen uppers snapped and warped by competent gunsmiths who attempted to swap barrels without this jig. Calgary Shooting Centre has all the parts, the jig and are the certified SAN repair depot I believe. They also confirm operation and zero on their range after the conversion. Ask for Marcus as he is a SAN certified smith. As well, they can certify the rifle as non-restricted if you put on the rifle length barrel.

Once it is converted to NR, do the CFO need to be informed about the conversion/transformation?

If you want it to be an actual NR then yes the authorities would have to be told.. How difficult that will be seems to vary by region and luck from what I've heard.

Which part is the registered firearm on a swiss arms anyway? Just the bare metal upper receiver?

While we debate the fate of our beloved Swiss Arms rifles...you can wile away the hours by dressing up your rifle in a ###y new stock!

Swiss Arms Folding Stock Adapter

We have imported another quantity of these high quality stock adapters allowing the installation of a variety of AR butt-stocks (Magpul, Rock River Arms, SOPMOD, whatever you like), while retaining the folding capabilities of the original Swiss Arms stock.

The price of the adapter is $229 +tax/shipping

To order: PM here on CGN, email at precisionoptics@hotmail.com, call our store at 250-747-4636, or call/text 250-991-1406.

Removal of the existing stock is very easy - there is a single, non-locking, one-way push-pin.

Installation of a new stock is just as simple and requires the addition of a standard threaded, commercial stock extension tube - such as this one supplied by our friends at Questar:

Here are pictures of the folding stock adapter, the removal of the existing stock, and subsequent installation of the stock adapter, the extension tube, and a Magpul PRS.

The folding stock adapter. The locking push-button is identical to that on the original stock:

The adapter is threaded to receive a commercial stock extension tube:

The interior of the adapter.

Swiss Arms Black Special with original stock:

Original stock has been removed. To remove the stock, simply push-out the pin from the bottom (the pin is lying to the right of the rifle).

The reverse side of the rifle, with the pin inserted.

The adapter has been positioned. The one-way push-pin must be inserted from the top of the rifle.

The adapter has been installed, with the pin pushed down and fully seated.

The adapter in locked position - the contours and lines match those of the rifle:

A standard threaded, commercial stock extension tube, available from many of our fine site sponsors (such as Questar, Wolverine, etc...):

The extension tube installed. Now your Swiss Arms is capable of receiving any number of AR butt-stocks:

Will certainly help those in need of cheek height adjustment on their stock by permitting the use of AR buttstocks - what's not to like?

The anchor tab in the hand guard no longer works.
If you want the butt stock to sit flush in the folded position, you have to either grind the tab flush or modify your butt stock with an indent to accept the tab.

Hiendlmayer in Germany is offering these.

PS: Congratulations on your restored freedom, my Canadian friends :)
PS 2: is it possible to restore the Swiss Arms picture thread? I really liked browsing through it.
