Tacitical Pump Action Shotgun: PIcking the Right Firearm

It's not about Remington.
Mossberg, Winchester or Remington are all offering good shotguns.
As with any other firearm - things happen.
Benelli isn't free of the quirks as well.
No problem with buying older Remington or going with Police model if one desires.
It's all about senseless tactical BS so popular those days.

If people find it helps them or makes their shooting experience more enjoyable then whats so wrong with it? I keep my shotguns quite basic and have preferences that I will not part with. Tritium GRS is at the top of my list and staying there, I'll take it over a bead any day. Dont act like Ive made a stupid choice and am ruining other's experiences by owning what I prefer. Remington express has serious QC problems and the police models cost as much as shotguns that have alot more going for them. If it works for you thats fine but my opinion is Remington shotguns are not trustworthy.

It's hard to talk about any preference when You buying your first shotgun.
It's even harder to talk about GR sights being faster to someone who has experience with them.

I'm deciding on my first shotgun purchase...

That's how this thread started. KISS principle applies anywhere where speed counts.

I agree but simple doesnt need to mean the most basic gear available. Some amenities are improvements to the right people, and hindrances to others. I think its good for the OP to hear experiences from different people with different tastes so he can make an educated choice. Like most of us he will buy, mod, re-mod, try other platforms etc until he finds what suits him. If barebones is his thing thats where he'll end up. If uber tacticool is his thing thats where he'll go. Most of us are somewhere inbetween with our own mix of bits and pieces that make up our ulimate shotgun. All the power to each of us to find what works.

Nestor,

I'm a guy who recently bought a tactical shotgun (Supernova 14" collapsible). I have used shotguns for about 25 years and have owned four very different SG's in that time. Although you'd be hard-pressed to find a more tactical looking SG than mine (even though it's not laden with lights or lasers or sidesaddles). I didn't buy it to defend my home from apocolyptic zombies. I didn't buy it to kill that 'bump in the night'. It is locked in a safe and bad-guys would have to give me a five minute head-start!
I didn't buy it for 'three gun' comp (but, that sounds like fun). I didn't buy into any "tactical BS". I didnt buy it as my primary hunter. I just bought it because it looked like something fun to shoot.
If someone else wants to buy a tactical gun who cares???
I don't regret my purchase at all. I think my Benelli gives me great value for my money. If someone gets joy out of their chosen 'weapon' who is anyone to judge?

i didnt see anyone mention the winchester sxp defender.

What do you guys think?

Mine was great, but I eventually sold it because I'm an idiot.

It would be better with a full-length mag-tube, if it was threaded for chokes, and if you could get it with ghost rings.

I still wish I woulda kept it. Super lightweight, fast/smooth action, chrome bore, looks nice, very affordable.

I'm sorry, I wasn't reffering to the toys.
I think that the new guy deserves a honest advice.
Honesty dictates to mention that the ghost ring sights are as useful for trap shooting as screen door on submarine.
They will slow him down indoors as well so for the intended purpose mentioned in the original post we can see the very best tactical BS taking control over the common sense.
I'm trying to save his money and if this is causing some controversy...who cares?

I picked it up about a week ago! Haven't been able to fire it yet, but completely disassembled, cleaned and lubed! Action feels very smooth. Can't wait to get it out!

I have a Rem 870 police magnum factory 14", from the late 90's, and it would be hard to beat. Solid as a rock and goes bang every time.

I can't speak for any of the other shotguns but what I can say is I love my Mossberg 590. The action is smooth as glass and Mossberg really nailed the ergonomics, not having to move your hand at all to operate the safety, trigger and release is awesome. Another thing I love is that the loading port is wide open which makes it a lot easier and faster to load. The 590 is very simple to take down and is built like a tank, she was made to survive in the battlefield. You do not need to add much to these guns for them to do anything and everything you need, a side saddle and a light (if that's your thing) and your bases are covered. My 590 has GRS and to the people saying GRS slow you down I disagree, when I lock into my cheek weld my eye is automatically in place for my sights to be lined up, no fuss about it. If you think GRS are slow you dont know how to make a consistent cheek weld. Also if you throw a pistol grip onto a Mossberg you're basically making the awesome ergo's of the gun moot as said above. The only downfalls that I can think of about the 590 is that it is a bit heavy (just man up) and the length of pull is a bit long but this can be fixed with an aftermarket stock.

I love my 590A1 18.5. The only thing I would do over is the GRS. They work but I would prefer a bead sight. Only mods I have are the S and J 2+ mag extension (now 7 + 1) and side saddle. The action is super smoothe. Highly recommended.

I agree on the ergos, but I can assure you I know all about achieving proper cheek weld, and for most people, ghost rings *are* slower.

There's a reason that you don't see many 3 gunners running them, for example.

Do you use both eyes or one with GRS

Nobody has mentioned a Stevens 350 security, available with or without ghost rings for a really good price. ht tp://www.savagearms.com/firearms/models/
