Tacitical Pump Action Shotgun: PIcking the Right Firearm

Thanks for all the input everyone.

I ended up puchasing a Mossberg 500 20" Barrel 8 Shot.

I decided to go for a cheaper shotgun and make the upgrade to a Benelli in the future.
Now that I have my shotgun I have a few new questions.
  1. Do Mossberg 500s in Canada ship with a Wooden Dowel / Magazine Limiter? I dont think there is one in my Mossberg.
  2. Where can I purchase a longer barrel? It's a bit difficult to find one for mine since mine is an 8-shot.
  3. Any recommendations for rails?

Congrats!

Not sure about the dowel.

I don't think any other barrels are available for long magazine Mossbergs. It's not a big deal however as spare barrels for most shotguns are expensive enough that you might as well spend a bit more money and buy another shotgun in the barrel length you want.

Good choice, that Mossberg will serve you well. As 870P noted, the magtube means no barrel swap for you unless you want a 20" cyl. bore :p If there is a plug, Mossberg uses a small dowel with 2 o-rings on it. Just remove your barrel and tilt the shotgun down and it will slide down and stick out the threaded bung on the end of the magtube. Then pull it out. The only way to swap barrels would be to get your hands on a 6 shot 500 mag tube and spring, and swap them out. Mossberg 500 barrels arent too expensive like Benelli but in this case the extra cost and work involved would be best circumvented with another shotgun. A cheap field gun off the EE would take care of your hunting needs. The reciever will be drilled and tapped for a rail available from many retailers, alot of the site sponsors should have one.

My 870 express is the tits. I use this gun for work and play and it has never failed in any manner. I have seen a bit of the rust issues that people were stating earlier but with a little oil after you take it out that totally negates that anyway. The Bennelli's are beautiful but I've heard that you have to be a bit of a gunsmith to take them apart (Dont flame me for that lol) and clean 'em. I have friends with Mossbergs as well and they love their guns as much as I love mine. Go to your local gun store, put a few shotguns in your hands, rack them, point them, do your thing and buy the one that you want to keep picking up. All your choices are decent choices and it comes down to personal preference. Its nice to have options. Happy gun shopping

I could see the semi's requiring a little more skill to take down but the Supernova takes down like a glock. Super simple and easy, much more so than an 870.

Benelli semis are simple to disassemble as long as you're not talking about taking apart the recoil return spring assembly in the stock, though that's not something you'd need to do very often.

I would have suggested to handle them both, after you feel the movement of the benelli an 870 feels like rubbing bricks together.

Also not sure but can the 870 eat 3 1/2" shells?

870 super mag can, but not the tactical version from what I remember. Had experience with all mentioned above and still like the Super Nova/Nova. Smooth action and comfortable fore grip make it a winner in my books. However, I'd like to see how it performs in harsh conditions and with it being thrown in sand/mud/dirt etc.

I decided to go for a cheaper (better priced) shotgun and make the upgrade (consider) to a Benelli in the future.

Congrats on your new Mossberg! I fixed a couple words for you. Once you break-in your Mossberg you may consider another SG. Get out there and shoot yours before you start "hanging stuff" off it. The KISS rule was meant for shotguns:)
I've had a few different brands over the years and while they all worked fine I prefer the ergo's of my non-pistol grip Mossbergs. I'm one who likes both bead and GR sights so I have one of each.
My 590's are a litle heavy but they're also built to last!

Good job on the Mossberg. I was gonna suggest a Mossberg 590 but you got the right idea.

Your Grand Children will thank you for it. Great shotgun. Just go run a couple of cases of shells through it then buy some more. There is a difference between cheap and inexpensive as in Best Buy. Yours is a Best Buy

Personally, I'd go for the Mossberg. The LPA sights are fantastic and you can always swap out the stock for a Hogue 12" LOP. Hell, you can even sell the collapsible stock. As for the lack of the 8-shot capacity, that's a toss up. You may be able to find a tube extension for it, but the Mossberg you listed would be lighter and more balanced than the 590 SPX. You can always learn to do fast reloads to make up for the lack of capacity. Just my opinion though.

EDIT:

Just saw the latest post. Good choice on the shotty!

In my opinion, don't get sucked into the "tactical" marketing BS from the respective firearms manufacturers.

Decide what features you want.

20 posts in here on CGN, so I'll assume you're looking at pictures and wanting a gun that looks cool/badass. I was much the same when I started out, but have refined my tastes somewhat.

Full disclosure: I have a Remington 870 Express Tactical like the one pictured.

First thing I'll say is, Ghost Ring Sights are USELESS. You're not going to be able to see them at night, and during the day you're going to take longer to get an accurate shot off on a zombie (I'm assuming that's the badass reason behind your search for a badass Tac Shotgun). Skeet shooters use a bead for a reason: you can get accurate shots off very quickly with them. I can shoot skeet without even really aiming at this point. I take the rail off my shotgun and the front post oft, and aim down my barrel/receiver.

For "OH COOL, THIS SHOTGUN IS BAD ASS" comments from friends: Ghost ring sights and a top rail is awesome.

For practical use in a SHTF scenario, I think they suck ass.

Now, regarding your choice of firearm.

I personally like Mossberg more than Remington because of the safety and slide release locations. Far superior. The Mossy's shell lifter also stays up and out of the way, which I like, too.

If I were you, I'd get an 8 shot Mossberg 500 or even a 590, foregoing the Ghost Ring Sights (GRS). GRS sucks.

Benelli's are nice shotguns, too, but I haven't owned one. I don't really have a preference for them one way or another because I haven't played with one. But I will note that they are popular in 3-gunning matches down south.

Also, I'd always go for the maximum capacity in a tactical type shotgun. This means a 6-7 round tube. Shotguns are limited in capacity as is, so I personally want as many rounds on/in the shotgun as I can get. No point in handicapping yourself with a 4-5 round tube.

[EDIT]

IMO, the SPX is a waste of money.

When considering a Mossberg, keep in mind that if you're getting the pistol grip stock, you're losing/gimping the two BEST FEATURES of the Mossberg platform. You're not going to have your thumb anywhere near the safety, and you're going to have to reach like a bastard to hit that slide release. The pistol grip stocked Mossbergs are the sure mark of a total dummy. People will be able to point you out as a dumb ass from 1000 yards away.

8-shot Mossberg 500 with 12" LOP Hogue stock for the win.

For the record, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Remington.

But the more I play with my guns, the more picky I get about certain things, and the controls on a Mossberg just seem to turn me on the most. I'm actually currently looking for a cheap 8-shot Mossberg 500.

This 590 is an example of "all you need" with the exception of an 8 shell side saddle.

Very late to the party but this is a phenomenal post. Well done sir!!

I picked the Tactical 870 over the mossberg. Some aspects to consider is where the safety is located for your liking, reliability. Other than that you can practical add a saddle to any of them as well as other accessories like lights, rails, etc...

If you're still not sure get to a store and see how they "feel". For some that matters more than anything else.

Good luck!

I dont have the 590 mossberg, I do however have the 535, use it for turkey hunting/skeet/whatever.... I can say that I have had zero issues with it, and there is well over 3000 rnds down the pipe, and they've been everything from birdshot, to buckshot, to slugs in the rifled barrel, 2 3/4" up to 3 1/2".... There great guns for the money IMO! Good buy!
