I hear you. I have just been introduced to the versa max. Looks good. Plus different chokes. I get why people use them. I figured M4 be durable and never have to worry. As most semis have issues. I may have to switch plans from M4 or max.
Take a look at the upgraded versa max from tacord if you're in the market for one. It looks like quality kit.

Used mine in Texas this week for a dove hunt. Limited out faster with the M4 than I did with my O/U. 
I think the RMR makes it easier to focus on the bird and not have to have your eyes in the perfect position every time.
Either way - put about 20 boxes through it without a hiccup. Biggest problem was funding a plug to limit to 2 rounds in the mag. It's reliable - albeit waaay heavier than Maxus or similar modern auto. It's built like a brick poohouse. Slower shooting than most. More like a kerCHUNK than the snappier quick action or others. Never shot a versamax but hear it is quick.

Stock is the 'field stock' - got it from Brownells a couple years back for about $200 USD if I recall. They are around but hard to find.
The ghost rings are great for slugs and deliberate shooting, but snap shots and wingshooting in general doesn't lend itself well to GR's. The Scalarworx top rail lets you use the ghost rings as a backup, as you can bottom 1/4 (about) co-witness. I zeroed the top of the triangle at 50 yards with slugs.

I needed a little convincing about the M4 but it is now my favourite gun (and I`m up to 9)
It is super reliable - Ive yet to have a failure of any kind and I buy the cheapest ammo I can lay my hands on, I been using it for clays and its been excellent for me (red dot helps for sure)
I think Ive had the pump out once since it arrived........

That Scalarworks rail is the sheeit Canucklehead, but no Canadian retailer seems to have any and Brownells is saying they are discontinued. They apparentry make an integrated Aimpoint micro rail too. The company won't export because of ITAR. There's got to be some way to get these into the country!

I saw that CTCS has them at one point, but they are sold out now. I got a hold of Scalarworks and asked them for info. Apparently the BOR110 has been discontinued, but they are going to release the IOR/RMR and IOR/Micro by the end of next month, and with any luck Canadian distribution of some sort will follow. The IOR/Micro will put an Aimpoint 3.97mm above the height of the receiver, so it will be possible to run the original stock with no riser and co-witness. The IOR/RMR will put the RMR just 2.66mm over the receiver, allowing co-witness as well. Very nice!
