Tavor FAQ (updated 08 December, 2008)

Who has trigger packs in stock right now? Also the long keymod forends? Thanks

I was in at Calgary Shooting Center yesterday and they had a couple different ones in stock but as much as I'd like a better trigger in the rifle I just can't justify $450-$500 for it. I don't think it's bad enough with the stock trigger to make the replacement a must have at any cost. These are not precision rifles and changing the trigger won't magically transform it into one.
I think Tier One Armoury in Edmonton had a forend for them in stock, I'm not sure which one they had or if they still have any as it's been a little while since I've been there.

I know Red Deer Shooting Center had FDE handguards last friday, but no black.

Check with Arms East for Geissele(if they are out ask who is selling them for them), Order direct from Shooting Sight for the Tav-D, and Accurate Action was the original importer of the Timney.

Has anyone actually put a quality high powered optic on the tavor and done some accuracy testing? I ask because I was just sighting in my tavor and half ass shooting (no proper benches at my gun range) and managed to get some half decent groups. I am looking forward to bench shooting this gun and seeing what comes out of it. I was only shooting with a 4x scope too.

Here is my best group of the day from 40 yds at Phoenix. I know I can get those groups down smaller next time.

Hey

I'm trying to install a flip magnifier to work with my red dot sight, but the rear built in iron sight (yellow circle) is getting in the way. So I have two questions for the experts.

1. Is there a way to change a Tavor 1.5 into a flat top?

or

2. Is there a way to remove the rear iron sights.

Thanks in advance

Used to be you could buy a gasblock without an ironsight from Canada Ammo with their flattop rail. That was many years ago now.

I bet if you went to North Sylva and asked for a replacement gas block the only thing they'd have is the flat version!

Also, your photos didn't work ;)

You need a longer range buddy! At 300 yards, with a Mepro & Magnifier, I could pretty consistently ring the gong. That's all I need.

Photo credit goes to Walls CK, who consistently outshoots me

But, Mikethebike did a pretty darn good ammo and group comparison a while back. I actually thought that thread was going to get stickied?

I have been in touch with Jon at NS lately, they do not have any flat top gas blocks in stock right now. Something to do with a certain CGNer buying to many after busting his during disassembly? Maybe Dilligaf? :p

He did say he had a few of the old style ones mentioned here, no good for us flat toppers.

Can we just contact NS for spare Tavor barrels?

Nope. NS has "tried" so they claim, but can not seem to get them as aparently IWI Israel wont make any spare 18.7" or 15" barrels. However the funny thing is that the US spare barrels are made in the same plant and shipped to the US.

Ian at Heron Arms can make them, and I have recently put IRUNGUNS on to chasing down some barrels and parts for us in the US as well since all the barrels, bolts, and bolt parts are the same and made in the same factory.

So I've spent 2 days blasting away with my Tavor now. I removed the trigger reset spring to reduce the trigger pull slightly and it's now somewhere around 9 pounds which I can live with. It seems to break consistently anyway so it's just a matter of getting used to it which only takes a few rounds. I find it comfortable and the ergo's and controls are easy to get used to. I had one double feed which was easily cleared, a few failures to lock back on last round (ammo was AE 55gr black box mostly). I didn't shoot any groups with it at 100 yards because I only have an Aimpoint PRO on it and my eyes don't see anything but the paper at 100 so any groups I tried were just on paper. I was able to ring the gong at will once I had a buddy spot my hits and I made an adjustment on the zero.

One day in the bush with it and one day at the range. I like it and it seems to be a well built and fun rifle. Still not sure I'm going to keep it long term but for now it will stay until I run some more rounds through it. I like it more now that I own one and get to run more than one or two mags through it before handing it back to the owner but it still doesn't give me the smile my ACR does.
After my day with it at the farm I removed the birdcage and installed a linear comp as I was not comfortable with the concussion from it. I find it much more comfortable to shoot now.
I think next time I take it to the range I'll put my Nightforce 3.5-15 on it and do a little accuracy testing.

The rifle was a hit at the range and everyone enjoyed taking turns draining mags with it.
I wish there was an easy way to mount my 3bucc brass catcher on it though, I hate losing brass.

The more rounds I put through mine, the more I like it - love it's compactness (and it's being NR!!!) the initial odd bullpup feel now seems a lot more natural and it's just a fun gun to shoot! :)

Gen 2.X BCG breakdown

Passed the 1500rd point in mine yesterday (yes it's gotten a LOT of use in a short period of time) so I decided it was time for a field strip + (disassembly of the BCG for cleaning). Did the fast version, without detailed breakdown of the BCG after each use prior to this, but never that step. So, read the manual, watched the vids...yup good to go. But.... nope.... that pin in the center, that everyone shows/describes as just pushing out with your finger was not doing that. Manual says to used a hammer and punch?! That didn't sound right when everyone else was pushing the damn thing out with their pinky. Reread, rewatched...thought the only trick was to make sure the firing pin flange was over that lip in reassembly. Well, couldn't even get to that stage! The pin would NOT come out; played with compressing the bolt and/or firing pin springs - nope. Guide rod all the way rear - yes...but still no go. Getting to the point of getting a hammer and punch after all and venting some frustration, but figured that probably just wouldn't end well. Back to Googling, found a reference a couple pages in on a U.S. site of the same issue, no pics, but there was a description of moving the guide rod ALL the way to the rear including making sure to use a little extra force so it actually extends out the back of the plastic piece on the end of the spring recoil assembly...AHA! That was not obvious in the manual, or on a couple vids I'd watched! The statement was always made "move the guide rod all the way to the rear", but nothing of making it actually pop out the back of that plastic piece! Back at it, a little force to pop that rod ALL the way back and out slid that damn pin just as easy as that...success! :) So a post here WITH PICS of just what is meant, to maybe help ease a little frustration from those other Tavor newbies who may be in the same position as I was.

Note mine is a Gen 2.5, with the US SAR-21 style recoil spring assembly, FYI!

NOW the guide rod is ALL the way to the rear, as it extends out the back

Closeup...it's at this point that the pin will now just drop out to release the bolt and firing pin
