Tavor FAQ (updated 08 December, 2008)

I bought one, sold it right away because it was weird. Saw a great deal on another so picked it up and sold it as well because it was still weird. Bought a third and finally accepted it for what it was and I’ll never go back to some front-heavy NR 18.5” barrel AR clone. The X95 is truly magical once you become one with the bullpup.

Welcome to the club and enjoy.

My Tavor won't chamber a round using the charging handle. Tried different mags and none of them worked. The only way it chambers is to use an empty mag, pull the charging handle to lock the bolt, then insert a loaded mag and use the bolt release to chamber the round. Is anybody having the same issue?

Nope. What model Tavor and has anyone altered it?

Do you mean the bolt is only pushing the round partially in?
Pull the handle all the way back, and then let it go. If you ride the handle forward with your hand at all, it robs the bolt of momentum. The bolt catch is working because the bolt is getting to slam home without interference.

Do you mean it doesn't strip a round at all?
Full magazines can be difficult to seat on a closed bolt, expecially in tavors. Pull on the magazine after insertion to ensure it's locked in place.

The bolt doesn't strip at all, I pull the handle all the way back and let it go just like other rifles, and it just won't chamber. I tried with 5-round and 10-round mags, but both didn't work. Only works with the bolt release.

How tight is your last round to load Into the mag?

So number 2 then. On a closed bolt, the magazine isn't inserting all the way. I bet if you gave it a solid tug, it would come right out. Fully seating a magazine in a Tavor on a closed bolt can take some effort.

Pointed in a safe direction at the range...1)Open the rifle and lock the bolt back with the bolt hold open. 2) with only 3 rounds in your 5 round magazine, put the charged magazine in the rifle and tug on it to make certain it's locked in. 3) Move the bolt action handle to the rear, unlocking the action. 4) While the action is still open and under spring pressure, let go of the handle. What happens? Does it chamber the round? If so, strip the round out by cycling the action by hand. Does the next round chamber?

Thanks guys, I will try next time in range. I think the best practice is to have the bolt locked open then insert the mag, and use the bolt release to chamber. This is somewhat inconvenient but seems to be the most reliable solution. The bolt hold open on tavor is another inconvenience, need to pull the bolt release lever in the back down. to lock the bolt open.

This is the exactly "problem" I had with mine.

Summary: Load 1 less round in the magazine, regardless of how many rounds it supports.

Long explanation:

The magazine well is tight and can actually hold the magazine without being fully inserted thus causing this sort of malfunction. I learned the root of the problem are the magazines. Usually 30-round magazines have a leeway that allows 1 or 2 extra rounds to be loaded in. This tolerance allows the rounds to be slightly pushed down in the magazine and be properly inserted in the Tavor.

Because of our Canadian laws, no magazine can hold more than 5 rounds (5/30 magazines) or 10 rounds (10/10 Cross Mag). This removes the leeway for the rounds to be pushed down and for the magazine to be properly inserted in the Tavor when full.

The only way I managed the gun to properly pick up the rounds was to load 1 less round in the magazines.

Thanks, it was quite embarrassing when I was showing off my new tavor to my friends at the range, and it won't chamber. I will try to load 1 less next time.

Rather than pulling the bolt release down, stick your forefinger into the mag well, with your thumb extended straight up and push the front portion of the bolt release up. It's way easier this way.
