Tavor FAQ (updated 08 December, 2008)

Passed the 1500rd point in mine yesterday (yes it's gotten a LOT of use in a short period of time) so I decided it was time for a field strip + (disassembly of the BCG for cleaning). Did the fast version, without detailed breakdown of the BCG after each use prior to this, but never that step. So, read the manual, watched the vids...yup good to go. But.... nope.... that pin in the center, that everyone shows/describes as just pushing out with your finger was not doing that. Manual says to used a hammer and punch?! That didn't sound right when everyone else was pushing the damn thing out with their pinky. Reread, rewatched...thought the only trick was to make sure the firing pin flange was over that lip in reassembly. Well, couldn't even get to that stage! The pin would NOT come out; played with compressing the bolt and/or firing pin springs - nope. Guide rod all the way rear - yes...but still no go. Getting to the point of getting a hammer and punch after all and venting some frustration, but figured that probably just wouldn't end well. Back to Googling, found a reference a couple pages in on a U.S. site of the same issue, no pics, but there was a description of moving the guide rod ALL the way to the rear including making sure to use a little extra force so it actually extends out the back of the plastic piece on the end of the spring recoil assembly...AHA! That was not obvious in the manual, or on a couple vids I'd watched! The statement was always made "move the guide rod all the way to the rear", but nothing of making it actually pop out the back of that plastic piece! Back at it, a little force to pop that rod ALL the way back and out slid that damn pin just as easy as that...success! :) So a post here WITH PICS of just what is meant, to maybe help ease a little frustration from those other Tavor newbies who may be in the same position as I was.

Note mine is a Gen 2, with the US SAR-21 style recoil spring assembly, FYI!

Guide rod "all the way to the rear"...but not quite just yet

NOW the guide rod is ALL the way to the rear, as it extends out the back

Closeup...it's at this point that the pin will now just drop out to release the bolt and firing pin

Thanks, nice pic... I had the same situation... just arrived to shoot mine... Thanks again!

Nope. NS has "tried" so they claim, but can not seem to get them as aparently IWI Israel wont make any spare 18.7" or 15" barrels. However the funny thing is that the US spare barrels are made in the same plant and shipped to the US.

Ian at Heron Arms can make them, and I have recently put IRUNGUNS on to chasing down some barrels and parts for us in the US as well since all the barrels, bolts, and bolt parts are the same and made in the same factory.

Irunguns is potentially bringing in Non restricted barrels or the sar 16 inch?

And thanks for the tip about heron arms.

You need a longer range buddy! At 300 yards, with a Mepro & Magnifier, I could pretty consistently ring the gong. That's all I need.

But, Mikethebike did a pretty darn good ammo and group comparison a while back. I actually thought that thread was going to get stickied?

Yea, Edmonton sucks for real ranges... Looking forward to moving back to Calgary in a couple years. I was just hiking in K country and I miss it down here.

Using a Leupold 1.5 - 5 x 20 I've gotten several sub MOA groups at 100 yards.
It will shoot sub 1.5 MOA with most loads.

My best so far was .8" with 60gn Nosler Ballistic Tip handloads.

Maybe mine is special.

Awesome, good to hear. I will trust you over most others, as most others don't do proper testing or just jump on the 3moa bandwagon.

To quote a #### star:" Sometimes you get sticky, sometimes you don't, what can you do..."

Great picture! That one belongs on instagram!

Tavor frt

Anyone have a copy of the Tavor FRT they can share here? Would like a print out to keep with the rifle for small game hunting and suspicious game wardens ;)

There is a sticky in General Firearms Discussion with a list of FRT #'s. Jay has it listed in post #2.

So what other rifles are used by today's armed forces around the world, as one of their main rifles, that is non-restricted? Is the Tavor the only one???? Just wondering....
