Tavor going restricted?

Being a SA varient of a FA is not illegal. Being a design based off of NAMED PROHIB is illegal because it can be very similar in design, likely with some interchangeablity of parts with a new name. Kinda like an AK47 is a named prohib and a Galil is a varient.
The function of the rifle is what makes it a prohib, not the name alone.

You did not define the word "variant" and tell me how it can not legally be applied to this situation.

You can attempt to justify it in your own mind that it is impossible that it could go prohib but if any of the recent actions by the RCMP have taught us anything, it is that nothing is safe or guaranteed.

The Tavor is on many peoples lists. You guys are like children if you think they are not eyeing that one next. It's the number one on there list. When they go for it Is up to them and at the right time they will strike.

Fine - since none of you sky is falling people will man up and sell me your tavor for 10 cents on the dollar, then what about the swiss arm folk? I'll buy you guys out for 5 cents on the dollar.

There is a whole section and a couple threads regarding why these rifles were reclassified....it good information to answer your questions.
That is not an answer as to how it would be impossible to prohibit them by calling it a "variant" or simply writing a new FRT like what was done recently with the TNW 50's. The lab will use any means possible, even make some new ones up if they so wish to fit their agenda.

Except that the Ak47 and Sig 550, semi or full auto, are prohibited by legislation. The Tavor is not prohibited by legislation, only prohibited IF it is fully auto. The name really does matter in this case.

without testing the legal defenition of "variant" in court, how do you know that it could not be applied here?

You make is sound like "variant" hinges on something being legislated, is that defined somewhere?

What would the tavor be a variant of?
The Ak47? SG550? AUG?

You keep posting here asking people to define 'variant', why dont you find out the definition for us?

there already is a prohib version of the tavor.

My point of asking was that there is no defenition, nobody has tested the word "variance" and it's use by the RCMP pertaining to the firearms act in the courts yet. Currently they are free to use it as they please remaining uncontested every time it has been used.

Some guy told me at the range a couple of weeks back that the Tavor had been reclassified restricted,I tried to look interested but as I hadn't heard anything it went in the trash can in my head lol.

Wow. This rumor thread went all the way to 8 pages eh?

I sincerely doubt a Tavor reclassification is on the books for this year or next.

That being said: if it happens, that's just another can of stupid trouble they've opened.

Well, if history teaches us anything, the RCMP wouldn't ask permission to change a firearm's classification.

Unfortunately, this is true. Time to call the CPC HQ and write our MP's again to pass legislation that protects FRT's from arbitrary changes. "Where's the legislation that we were promised?" They've lost my vote until they make good on one of their many promises. Harper promised to abolish C-68 and that never happened. It's been going downhill for legal firearms owners ever since...

There's also been rumours of the RCMP wanting to prohibit .50 BMG and rumours of the Great Flying Pumpkin being spotted early this morning.

Live in the now. Buy/own what you want and enjoy it while you can. Any firearm can be made prohibited by an Order In Council, so technically NOTHING is safe.

Very true.......for that matter , any federal govt. with a majority can create any firearm laws they wish.....they can ban all private firearm ownership in Canada with the stroke of the pen since unlike the U.S. , firearm rights are not enshrined in the Canadian Constitution........firearm owners are pretty much at the mercy of any govt. in power ; luckily the Senate is quite heavy with conservatives right now.....so that might give firearm owners some breathing room if the current CPC does fall in the next election......

No doubt the RCMP want to prohibit pretty much all firearms if they could get away with it.......the RCMP is probabley the biggest anti-firearm lobby group in Canada right now.....
