I think everyone is jumping the gun on this one. it doesn't really say the kid was shot after hunting hours. not sure if manitoba is the same way but here in saskatchewan you can shoot from 30 mins before sunrise to 30 mins after sunset. the sun set at or just after 650 and the cops were called just after 730. the guy could have been tending to his victim/ panicking for 11 mins and still have fired at a legal time. you don't always have to jump to Indian even if it is easy to do especially in manitoba. if the kid was shot 10 mins after legal hours I don't think that automatically means it was a native night hunting. I've heard plenty of shots just before and just after in first day of deer season.
The shooter is native but coming from Duck Bay which is just a few miles north of the Pine Creek Res. I don't think he is status...There has been a lot of trouble around here with night hunting for decades...The hunters coming out of the Pine Creek area are serious about what they do and have a huge area that they travel...Mostly because their near by area has been shot out for years already...I have buddies 3 hours west in Saskatchewan and 4 hours south in Manitoba that run into Pine Creek poachers...I mean hunters.
As far as being dark...From what the neighbours say it was after dark...Just enough so a seasoned hunter could not tell a human from a beaver...That's pretty dark...Although I doubt the shooter thought it was a beaver...I would bet dollars to doughnuts he thought he was shooting a white tailed deer.
I always thought it was the natives could have their free for all, but only on reserve land? They have to follow hunting laws (save bag limits), on crown land or with permission on private. And private or posted land they still require permission like the rest of us?
Or am I wrong?

Ok, so it's different in Saskatchewan then. Manitoba is going to be an interesting place when all the animals are gone...
Yeah it's a pretty sad and dangerous situation...Here in Manitoba it has a lot to do with the NDP and the last 12 or so years they have had to Fyke things up...Brian Pallister and the new PC Government are trying but old habits are hard to break...If not impossible...Hell, last year first nations were pushing to get the right to hunt, if that's what they want to call it even on private land without permission.

Update on night hunting victim...
Subject: Zane's progress
Hey everyone Zanes surgery went really well today, it was as good an outcome as we could have hoped. They repaired his jaw, surgeon said it was broken in 7-8 pieces and some couldn't be fixed so he took them out all together. He has three metal bands stabilizing the front and sides of his lower jaw now (but not wired shut!). Not sure if he'll lose teeth that depends on blood flow. The hyloid bone in his neck is fractured but it has to heal on its own. He'll be six weeks before it's all healed and will have to be very careful. There will be rehab with a laryntologist to help his vocal cords and swallowing. While still very swollen his airway is stable and all major blood vessels are intact. This was a one-in-a-million chance that it happened the way it did my son is still here and mostly intact (!) and we feel so so so lucky. Not sure exactly when we r getting out of here, by mid-week we could be home and on the road to recovery. Thank you all for your love and support so we did not have to go through this alone. I can't begin to thank you enough or tell you how much your caring and concern have meant to us.
