Testing Criteria for Take Down, back pack, hiking and survival 22 cal rifles

As for torture testing. All you really need to do is a drop test.

Sure water and mud are great, but in a survival situation you would certainly try to take care of your lifeline.

And if it fell in mud you would clean it.

So the question is... can you get the gun working again easily if it falls in the mud?

Also, take into account the little badger can only be stripped with a torx. So for mine I added a small torx Allen key to the pack so.if the mechanism did get muddy I can clean it.

Perhaps a minor tool kit to repair your survival gun would not be a bad idea?

the Papoose is being elusive so far.
still waiting for a sale to pop up.
not that i mind dropping $400 but id rather drop $300 if i can!

i called wholesale sports and asked when they would be on sale next and they wouldn't tell me.
so now we play the waiting game......

I don't think you can beat a single shot bolt action for reliability and simplicity.....my latest aquisition was a BRNO 468 'garden gun',lightweight, well built and very accurate... If you wanted a multiple shot, then the JW 15a 'backpacker' is probably the best candidate

IMOH, the Ar-7 is an inaccurate piece of junk. The first time I saw one in action, I out-shot it by a very wide margin with a circa 1935 Winchester Model 67. If you want an (acceptably and repeatably) accurate rifle that will ensure your "survival", get an old (good condition) Cooey 75, Winchester 67, CIL Anschutz, or one of the newer Savages.

I believe that the old Cooey single shots can be taken out of their stocks very easily ..... sort of a makeshift takedown of sorts even if that wasn't the intended purpose.

Just a few years ago, these Marlins were on sale for the low $200's at WSS and then they jumped to $400. As typical, I snoozed and losed. They still go on sale when WSS sometimes puts all Marlins on sale from time to time.

I've been very interested in the takedown concept for a 22 ..... they can be thrown in the boat, if you're set up for river hunting or stashed on an atv or in a truck cab or brought in if you fly in somewhere .... I think there is some value in a survival gun for remote areas and getting stuck out there as there is only so much 30-06 you'll likely have in your pocket. To me, an all weather rifle or waterproof case is a must ... any kind of water or cold weather test would be of great interest.

I like the papoose for its more compact size and light weight, but the ruger is more useful in that the full stock would make it a good trainer for new shooters.

I'll be watching this thread with interest ... so far, I've refrained from buying a 22 rifle as I get to shoot so few times in a year that I usually shoot the big guns. I think that if I bought a 22, it would make more sense to get a takedown.

I've owned them all at one time or another, and the papoose is the one I still have. One of my favourite guns. Crazy reliable, very accurate, light weight. I love how it takes down, and really enjoy hunting small game and plinking with it.

with basic 10/22 is 27.25" when folded, the best what I can get in terms of practicality, reliability, parts supply accuracy, fun factor, resale value. hope we'll get back 25 rd mags for it.

i actually have that stock on one of my 10/22's from back in the early 90's!

Side question but in the spirit of compact 22's:

Does anybody sell underfolder stocks for the 10/22 anymore? I know HiCal has a few but they don't have much of a selection anymore. I missed the boat years ago when they had a much bigger selection and would like to pick one of the straight ones up. Like this: http://hical.ca/straight-10-22-underfold-stock/ Can anyone help me out with this?

I would pick this over anything else on your list, light, compact, easy to disassemble and clean, lots of aftermarket parts available.

Also, not a .22lr but what about the KelTec Sub2000, folds in half, easy to deploy and use, light, takes Glock 17 mags. 10 round of 9mm is a little better than .22lr.

I have one and I had no problems with it.

Traditions has a new one out called the crackshot...insert jokes here. BTW I have owned all but the Ruger takedown which I heard had accuracy issues... my papoose shoots dimes at 25 yds all day with minimags and a 4x scope.

I'm guessing the papoose micro-groove rifling has a lot to do with its accuracy. I know my 981T is....and the reason why I keep it:)

Too bad that H&R is done... their youth SB1 Sportster .22 and .22 Mag were tiny, light and indestructible... I used both on the trapline.
