The 223 as a viable big game round.

I've wounded enough coyotes with a 75 gr bullet from a 223 to know that there is no way I'd consider using it on open country deer.
Pic for your pleasure

Nice haul.. and, yes so many better cartridges for deer than the 223

No... no line-ups, nobody rushing out to exchange their .30-06's for .223's... but some will choose them, some will start with them, and some will use varmint ammo.

No, few if any will choose varmint ammo. The .223 has been legal for big game in so many places for so long that if there was a real problem, it would be well publicized by now. Shooting 308 ammo in a 3006 is probably a more common mistake than picking varmint ammunition for deer hunting.

It is likely that the ones choosing .223's will be the "least experienced... most of those with experience will know better... "most."

No, most new hunters are more likely to reach for a .308 or 3006 than anything smaller because they think it gives them a "margin for error."

Lol... who is going to "publicize" it??? The guy who shot and wounded and LOST half a dozen deer, or the guy who managed to kill one and then posed it with his "Storm Trooper" rifle, took pictures of the rib cage and a plate of tenderloins?

Your rabid opposition to the .223 is more than a little off putting.... 'storm trooper' rifle?! Really?
Please dont start with banning those next..... your already naming guns liberal names..... that's how the ball gets rolling.

Do you have a problem with storm trooper rifles, as you call them?

Nope... I have no interest in using them, but I don't really care what legal platform anybody else uses... and would like to see an advancement made in what constitutes a "legal platform."

My position is no more "off putting" than that of those who continually pimp this minimalist philosophy regarding big game taking cartridges... I have ZERO opposition to "the .223"... I own and load for and shoot three of them currently. I oppose a minimalist philosophy when it comes to hunting... that is, when there are better options available... if there were no other options available, I would be hunting deer with a .223 too... but I would be extremely conservative with regard to target distance and extremely choosy with regard to shot placement and extremely discerning with regard to bullet & load... the .22 CF group should be considered an "experts" choice when applied to big game hunting... BUT, there ARE many other and better options available to me, and pretty much every other Canadian hunter... so who is trying to prove what? And at who's expense?

It seems like the 223 is ... well just enough. If things go well... which they always do not.
Sort of a fastest sleeker version of an 7.62 x 39...marginal to get it done properly when things don't go perfectly.
Some folks feel it is a challenge to be accepted. Not me, thanks.

You're forgetting the internet hunter hero award for using small calibers on big animals. Those of us who use other calibers just suffer from magnumitis. Didn't you know that only great hunters use small cartridges?
Do I really have to bring up Bell and the little old lady and the 22lr grizzly story?

:d
