The 25-06 Remington

Being in the vicinity of a pissed off grizzly would have to do more with oneself, than the bear? Surely with all of the "experience" being expounded on here, one would easily know there was a Grizz in the area? Unless the plan is to put oneself into harms way intentionally, in order to be able to shoot a Grizz?
Are all black bears nuisance bears, now? As to diminish them, and find a reason to pack heat for the bigger bears?

Most of the bears I have seen in my life were nuisance bears, regardless if they were black, brown, white or grizz. And no, if you've ever shot an elk in grizz country, their being pissed off doesn't really require your actions, aside for that. As to "pack heat" (really? watching some noir movies of late?) for big bears, yeah, bigger holes better. - dan

Fair enough. That's why the questions were asked.
Plenty of Elk have been shot in Grizz country, and a pissed off one hasn't been encountered, yet. This would have more to do with situational awareness than anything else. The packing heat part seamed appropriate, given the way these threads have gone, of late. Big bears would get big holes, if we were able to hunt them? We are not, so there is that.

We used to. And should one decide I'm between it and whatever it is I just shot, I prefer the insurance. I don't expect anyone else to do that, they can decide for themselves. For what it's worth I have seen polar bears killed with a 222 Remington. And there used to be a huge mounted grizz in the Ab fish and wildlife building on 107 st that had been killed with a 22 rimfire. I'm just not that good. - dan
 
Would it be my choice to hunt g-bear, absolutely not. Big difference between defense and hunting. Defense is short range, with your elk down, have your rifle at hand, with a really tough good penetrating premium bullet. Something like a 100gr ttsx doing 3500 ft/sec. Penetrated skull ought to calm one down.
 
I shot this bear a couple of weeks ago absolutely face on. I was on a steep embankment 50 yards above him and did not want to mess up his skull. So as soon as he turned his head I shot him inside his right shoulder and the bullet exited right behind his nuts. The results were dramatic. The bullet and cartridge were the 250gr partition and 338 Winchester Magnum. I don’t think I would have any hesitation shooting any approaching bear in the chest with that combination.

Nice bear. Likely would have had the same effect with a much smaller cartridge/bullet considering you don't kill them via the nut sack. But if the bear seems bigger with a bigger cartridge, giver. This is how stories are made. BTW I like your face paint. Suits you!

A 338 WM, with a 250 grain bullet, for Black Bear? How very Joe Average of you, Charles! Over head stamped and what not? My goodness.
Completely agree that the same result could be had with a far lesser combo.
Also not sure what a 338WM has to to with a 25-06 thread, other than the usual tireless self promotion and broken arm back slapping.

I do not disagree at all. I think a smaller cartridge would have been just fine. And it may have had the exact same result. I’m not quite sure why you have gotten the impression I shot him in the nut sack, maybe I wasn’t clear. I shot him face on just inside the shoulder. So between his neck and shoulder. The exit wound just happened to be where it was. But was a great illustration of the penetration capability of that cartridge and bullet.

The personal insults could go away though.

But a bear shot with a cartridge/bullet capable of burning through a cape buffalo should be no surprise as it really isn’t much of a test.
Sharp teeth and claws aren’t usually accompanied by thick skin, heavy bone, a grass filled gut ime.

The main reason I chose my 2506 was I live in a caliber restricted zone. I thought I could be happy with 1 varmint rifle for southern Ontario and I wanted one with enough pep for deer or black bear and enough reach if I ever hunted antelope. The 2506 split the 243 and 270 using mainly varmint bullets I chose the 2506 over the 257wby for barrel life
The 2506 has proven itself on every animal I have used it on including my biggest black bear which hung at 287lbs gutted. 120gr positive expanding bullet liquidfied the chest cavity contents. One loud growl and it rolled down the bank dead

Sure other bullet diameters have better numbers but anything the 2506 can throw straight and constructed for its intended target will work on game. Crows groundhogs coons fox coyote wolf deer and black bear and I wouldn't hesitate to use it for moose
