The .270 Win club, are you in?

My least favourite cartridge of them all.

Non-magnum performance, magnum recoil, long action, lousy bc's and SD's.

If it mattered with good bullets inside half a kilometer I'd try to care.:D

I absolutely love mine. It's a Ruger #1B that consistently manages 3/4" groups with excellent velocities due to the 26" barrel.

In fact I like it so much I got everything lined up for Dennis Sorensen to true a Remington 700 and install a Gaillard barrel. Unfortunately since then my boat's I/O motor has died and I have an expensive motor replacement coming up. So the project has been called off and I can set someone up with a Gaillard barrel and maybe donor action.

That's pretty much how I look at it too. The advantages of bullets more aerodynamic and better constructed than a 150 grain Partition being driven at 2970 fps are lost on me because within my personal maximum of 450 yards any advantage seems to be academic.

Wouldn't want to leave a bottle of Elmer's White around a guy who makes comments like that. He'd have the lid of and the inside tongue polished before you could say "Jack O'Connor".:p

40 head of big game with that cartridge from 50 to 500+yds and I'd say it works just fine. Hornady's do have a hard time expanding out past 45o though.
Give me a 150gr TSX and some H4831 and I'd even hunt the big bears with it. Phil Shoemaker said he would too.

I have one and feel I should get another one...I'm thinking one of the new FN built Model 70's in the EW dress might work....I've gone thru the 6.5 Swede,7-08, 7-08AI, 280 and 280AI...none of them do anything you can't do with a plain vanilla 270 Win.....I shot my first handful of deer with a Weatherby Vanguard in 270 and 130 gr Partitions......20 years ago..
here's a pic of my current 270...:)

Hmmm...2 of my favourite calibers, 270 and 7mm-08. I use the 270 and she uses the 7-08.

My 270 is a 27 yr old Steyr Mannlicher Luxus with a VIII 1.5x5, shoots 3 touching at 100yds using Norma powder and 130gr Nosler Partitions.

Her 7-08 is a Steyr Classic Lite ( Mountain ), with a Bushnell 4200 2.5-10x50 and she likes the Fusion 140gr but need some range time to get her groups down...but no problem knocking dinner down!

I had a .270 built on a 98 Mauser with a Douglas light contour barrel in a Herter's stock. It had just the right feel and balance, it shot stupid accurate in no small part thanks to a great trigger, and cycled smoothly. It is one of the few rifles I regret selling. But in the end I am married to the '06, which I believe is just a hair better, for my particular situation.

Have always had at least one in the stable since 1962.

Every big game animal I have shot at with a 270 has died, and most with a single shot, including the second largest moose I ever shot, and that big guy was an awful long ways away.

This .270Win is my go-to deer rifle. It's a pushfeed Model 70 XTR Featherweight w/Leupold M8 6x that's accounted for several nice bucks from close in to waaaay out there. I wouldn't hesitate to take a moose or elk with it either ;)

Thanks for the one I got from you:D, what do you presently have in 270?

Another member of the club here. Between my brother and myself we've probably shot
75+ deer with the 270. I've been guilty of stretching the range "a few times". For me it is a nice blend of range, power, portability and easily managed recoil. (of course I am building a 280 as we speak, another favorite of mine) I currently have a very nice 270 sako that has been tweaked by Bill Leeper, as it sits with a 3.5x10 leupold it is right at 7lb 12 ounces, a very nicely balanced package.

My 270 is an old JC Higgins with the Belgian made commercial M98 action and chrome lined bore. Action is incredibly smooth and shoots 130gr Accubonds into 1 1/4" groups. Used it to shoot an awesome double main beam buck a few years ago. The 270 worked great.
