The .270 Win club, are you in?

My Remington 700 Mountain .270

I wish I was in. My all time favorite cartridge was the 270. My first was an older Sako AV with a nice laminate stock. Then I traded up to a Sako Finlight in 270. Then figured that was too much rifle so I sold it and bought a Remmy 700 Stainless with a walnut stock and shot it for a few years. Sold it and now I have another 700 but in 30-06 (price was right), I was looking for a 270, maybe I'll rebarrel it next year.

Pics of my Remmy before I sold it. Some lucky CGNer has it now.

My first rifle was a 30-30 (which I still have), and my second was a 270 my dad gave me. It's a Interarms mark X, a real nice old gun, and plenty accurate too.

My least favourite cartridge of them all.

Non-magnum performance, magnum recoil, long action, lousy bc's and SD's.

I don't know what you're talking about when you say magnum recoil... I'm using a Remington 710 in .270 and just took my first black bear last week. And believe me when I say this, there is a HUGE difference in the recoil between my .270 and my dad's 7mm Mag... the .270 being much less.

Anyhow, don't mean to argue just adding a comment. Like it's been said before: "the game can't really tell the difference".

Pround member here. Also, the poster mention 'magnum recoil' has no idea what he's talking about. A 270 with a 130 grain bullet has far less recoild than a 30'06 with a 150 grain bullet which isn't even a magnum.

I would reference the recoil chart but I can't be bothered.

Recoil can be felt more with a poorly fitting stock. I have a Ruger m77 .280 and it has a vicious recoil and that is the stock that makes the recoil feel worse. I also have a Winchester mod 70 xtr fetherweight in .270 and it is very comfortable to shoot and will put 4 shots in a dime which covers all holes. I have had this .270 for over 33yrs and ventilated a few yotes and deer with it.
I guess I am in also.

Hey Guys.
I am quite new to guns, pretty much have just shot a few rounds from a few guns. Looking for a .270 for my first gun purchase.
Any suggestions?

On my second 270win.Done the magnum thing(many rifles) Now have a Sako AV 270 Win,love it. 6.5 also very interesting.

^^^ Ignore the troll.

The 270 is a more flat shooting cartridge than the 30'06. It's basically a necked down 30'06 cartridge so that bullet is more aero-dynamic so it's well known to shoot more level. This means it's easier for a novice to hit his deer at 250 yards if it's sighted in for, say, 100 yards since you don't have to worry about bullet drop as much. (about 1.5" for me)

I'm not saying the 270 is superior to the 30'06. They both have earned equal accolades for excellent big game kills. Most people would aggree that it's a toss-up. The 270 is flatter shooting and is pretty much the ideal deer cartridge. The 30'06 is slightly more versatile as it can take down bigger game without as accurate shot placement. The 270 is an excellent choice for you.

I would recommend the Savage 111http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/111FCXP3. I have one and it shoots very accurately. It's also affordable at $429 including an entry level Bushnell scope. You can replace this if you like, it's basically free. This package also comes with a throwaway Simmons scope which you should avoid if possible for the one with the Bushnell scope.

Also, to the above troll: Yes, I know that recoil is complex but I was addressing another troll who said that the 270 has the recoil of a magnum. It's certainly true that a 270 in 130 grain bullet will have less recoil than a 30'06 with the common 150 grain bullet. This is, of course, with all else being equal. (rifle weight, stock design, action).

It's not a subjective opinion, just google any recoil chart for verification.

Nope. Have a .243, .25-06, a few 7x57's, and a 7x64, so, got both sides covered more than twice. I like the .270, but have no urge to buy one and no real need.

Thanks for the info idcurrie. I see some good reviews on the savage arms stuff and it is decently priced. I dont know alot about guns yet, but I have shot a few different ones, and the .30-06 was nice, but I dont need it for what I plan on doing.
I want to get my courses done so I can buy one and start practicing.
