The black bear king of the internet thread.

Not sure why it won't imbed properly, let's try this again. He was a mature boar just not at all exceptional, for the work has to be exceptional.

Turned down an exceptional one on the coast last week, was running out the client's grizzly solo and saw a brute on shore, sat and watched him and sighed. Just didn't have it in me to do the work with the amount of daylight left, trying to watch the boat on the rockshore with a 21' tide... Etc. If I'd had a helper I'd have taken him.

I will play along....long awaited hunt derailed by forest fire....hunt cancelled....but wait!!! With an hours notice pack everything possible and head to the lake to see if they baits were hit as they lifted the evacuation. Sure enough even after a week without bait they were and this guy came in. Let him walk the first night due to the knowledge of a legend strolling near the other bait but a quick trail cam check and it appears he has gone back into wherever he disappears to. A night of self questioning made it clear that if he came back he wouldn't leave.

Day two....terrible wind but you never know so down I sat. Almost to the minute from the night before he comes in. He won't measure up to Douglas' however based on the circumstances couldn't be happier. 50 yard shot. 20 yard recovery. Cooper m52 270 with Berger 150 grain riding along around 2900 fps.

Yep Angus he looked like a good one, but I'm not hunting them where they tend to get 9 ft anyway, so a good 6 1/2 ftr makes me happy. Besides I don't have to spend a bunch of money, gas and time...........I got them trained to come to me, that's gotta be worth a couple feet, and a few bonus inches on the skull......no?

All very true and you were the first to score, no beating that. ;) The grizzly I posted a few pages ago, I was closer to than this guy. Not by choice he made it that way, no outright aggression just wondering what we were doing in his river. Gotta admire their balls, and small wonder they disappear wherever they run into frequent human contact. Zero ####s given.

Well I hate to do this to you guys and gals but I banged another bear this afternoon............younger and not as big as my first but I couldn't resist........standing within 15 mtrs from where the first one was so I shot it from the same porch post, with the same rifle and guess what........same dead. Nice cinnamon color but not nearly as big. Should be better eating............SORRY.............Will post pics maybe tomorrow.

That's my "porch gun".......700 CDL in 7 RUM driving 160 ABs at something over Mach 3 c/w a 4-12 Leupold.........This rifle shoots this load into 3/4" when I'm up to the task. I hit this bear a bit back of the diaphragm but shredded the liver. She never bled a single drop we just found her about 50 mtrs from where she stood by circling out through the trees and searching for blood. Luckily just stumbled on to her.

Not sure you'd want to divide by two but why not if your gonna enter two.
Good show on cutting both tags and to 2233 as well on his bear. I'm going to try to get out myself for the first time next weekend providing we get a transmission and twin pac into one of the machines this week, all work and no play lately.

Well Phil, I look at it like this.......some areas have quality and some areas have quantity. One big bear is not necessarily better than 2 smaller bears...........two bears have to count for something, over just one. Obviously that makes me a better hunter, right? (OK I'm stretching it for all it's worth, I agree) I assumed when I read the criteria for Black Bear King of the Internet, that it would be the aggregate score of your legal limit. It's not my fault that I have a psychic connection with the bears around here and can call them in at will, when I have an afternoon to kill, so to speak...........

Well, Doug, guess I'll have to get the 270 out of the safe.

Didn't you tell me one time, that total score is determined by skull size divided by caliber, then divided by grains of powder used? ;)

Ted

I'll add mine. Not a monster but 190 dressed weight. Bullet went in ahead of the right front leg and came out ahead of the left hind leg. Gun was a Marlin SBL in 45-70 with 360 cast bullet. Shot at about 30 yards over bait. I had hoped to film the shot but he came in behind the GoPro I had mounted the the tree and started sniffing and licking the camera. I had to shoot him before he ate it LOL.

Given my penchant for huge cases and large calibers most times, I doubt I ever came up with, and related that formula to you Ted..........I likely burn more powder per animal taken than 99% of other hunters, but then like I have often said........there is no such thing as "too dead", but there sure as hell is "not dead enough".

James (#1 son) arrowed a 7 footer a couple evenings ago, skull over 20".........sorry no photos but he's pure black and very well haired. One of his biggest blackies yet, he said.
