The Blackbastard is born (New pics May 12th)

Well Silent has been a very busy busy man. I picked up some steel last week and he has been machining like a demon..

Here are the latest pics we just took.

Black Bastard

We are getting VERY close now. Tonight I am going to make the shell extractor and hopefully get it finished tomorrow (this is one of the fiddly bits that I have been avoiding). After that I need to put the final touches on the firing pin and bolt, this should take about 6 hours. Make and install the bolt handle and butt plate and then it is time to start welding.

I can almost hear it barking now.

We are open for a good name for it. Submit your ideas and we will let the winner come down for a test drive.

Silent Runner

Silent just droped in to pick up the barrel that I had turned down today............shaved quite a few lbs off her.

But it is still going to be a brute!

The bolt and barrel extension are made from 4140. This is a nice tool steel that is not too bad to machine and has good strength properties. It will not be hardened for the first trials since there may be some touch-ups to do. After that, case hardening is the best as you do not want through hardening as it is too brittle for the impacts that will happen.

The bolt is 1 1/2 inches in diameter by 10 inches total length (we will post some pics of the final assembly later). The barrel extension is 2 1/2 inches in diameter, with a 1/2 inch wall in the high stress area. Although this should be more than adequate for strength, we will be a safe distance away during the proof testing.
