The Blackbastard is born (New pics May 12th)

you should NEVER fire 50bmg WITHOUT muzzle brake, the best available is the ARMALITE from the AR-50, give wolverine a call, they can supply only the brake for around 175 usd and there is 2 thread possible

I have a 36" park tank in Ottawa if you need a hand.

8)

Thanks but we need 44". I guess size does matter.

Why should you not fire a 50 without a brake? Other than the extreme pain and recoil?

Not to worry we plan on installing one anyway but I am curious as to your logic.

Firing a 50BMG rifle without a muzzle brake can result in detached retinas in your eyes due to the recoil forces!

Definitely not recommended.

Not being a smartass on this one.......you got any sources of info on that?

The late Gale McMillan once posted on rec.guns that firing a .50BMG without a muzzle brake gernerated enough recoil to cause a detached retina. I tend to take his word for it, since he forgot more about the .50BMG than most folks will ever know. I never fired one myself, but if Gale said it, I pretty much believe it. Since I'm down to one working retina, I think I'd pass on it. Bones heal, retinas don't.

That's the most I could find -- someone suggesting it could happen. No evidence it ever did...

Ahhhh... urban gun myths. Maybe I should start dnopes.com

This is a freind of a freind of a freind ..... story but - I was told that CF snipers using the 50bmg were warned to limit their shooting to 20 shots a day to prevent retinal seperation. I would like to know if it is caused by recoil or air pressure hitting you in the face. My 50 does not have much recoil (due to the massive muzzle brake) but it feels like somebody is hitting you in the face with a straw broom when you fire it. I seriously doubt I could handle more than 20 shots in a day anyway.

As an aside, what about all those blind arty guys running around? Creepy ####ers that used to shoot 155's with their retinas hanging down on their cheeks like cheap french love dots. /shudder

Maybe that's why in the movies the guys always plug their ears and shut their eyes when they drop a mortar in the tube...

I wasn't aware that 0.075" eyelids were sufficient blast shields to prevent detached retinas... maybe the answer is to squint while aiming then close your eyes and shoot.
