THE BUILDER'S THREAD: If it loads from the front or burns BP, POST IT HERE

Thanks,

They are shooting really well, especially the 38-55. Now i am building a 14 lb sharps starting from a 1874 sharps action from C Sharps and a trade gun. I just ordered a Kibler Colonial in 54 and extra fancy maple. Should be here this fall so I can build it this winter.

Some real beauties in this thread. I've always wanted to try and build a flintlock kit , but they are impossible to find in Canada. Has anyone ordered them from the States lately ? If so any issues getting them across the border ?

I brought in two Kibler kits this year without any issues at all.

Introducing Daisy.
This .45 cal. Kibler southern mountain rifle is a recent build for a friend. The design of the sideplate was high on his wish list and should tell anyone familiar with the map of Canada where she resides. The cherry stock is finished with ferric nitrate and linseed oil and the hardware is rust blued. Anyone care to guess how she got her name?
And now for a little range time:

I have built a few flintlocks. Don't know how to post pics on this forum. My last completed one is in my avatar but I have a Rupp/Kuntz inspired .40 cal that has been about 80% done for the last 14 or 15 years. Sadly, I have a nice .62 Getz barrel, 42" IIRC inlet into a decent walnut stock that I was going to build a long barrel Jeager for hunting that I have never done anything with and a couple sets of lock parts for a couple more SXS's as well as barrels and a couple REAL nice walnut blacks for a sxs. I think I have a set of 12ga barrels that I already breeched for a flint and a couple sets of 20Ga barrels suitable for a sxs flint but do not know if I will ever get to them. I did put together a couple kits years ago, a Lyman Great Plains for my son and a Chambers smooth bore for my Dad. Oh, and I put together a TC kit for a guy in trade for an old pickup. Used to love building guns but lost interest. keep telling myself that I will get back to it when I retire but, truth be told, don't even know if I know how to build any more. Love seeing way others are ip to though. Good stuff and thanks to all for sharing.

Now that I can post pics I thought I would contribute to this thread. The barrel are salvaged from a suppository gun, 12G, 30" that I breeched and the locks are L&R late English (IIRC) that are heavily modified. Every other part/piece is made by hand including all screws. These pi=cs were taken shortly after completion but not long after I stripped it down and stained the stock. I was going for a Purdey "slakam" colour but missed the mark.

You really have some talent in being able to reproduce the English Flint DB so accurately. I have a copy of William Brockway's book and I understand the amount of planning and labour that went into this project. Well done - its a beatiful gun.

Thanks for the kind words. I did have an issue with the locks as they are completely unsuitable for recessed breeches and, being a massive 12 bore, recessed breeches are pretty much a must IMO in order the keep it;'s girt to a minimum. This was my first attempt at an English double and I learned a lot. I was getting ready to build another in 20 bore with correct locks for recesses breeches but lost interest before completion. I got the locks mostly built, one just needs the sear and sear spring finished and the other the sear, sear spring and main spring. They were an interesting project in themselves as I bought the lock plates, frizzers, and hammers from Peter Dyson (William Moore) but made all the rest. Was fun while it lasted. Hopefully will gat back and finish these locks and build a 20 bore around them. When building the` one posted, I have made jigs for the trigger guard to make it quicker/easier to make another one the same. These are the locks that I was working on.

I worked on a couple projects. I barrelled a Hepburn in 38-55 with a Ron Smith gain twist barrel and casehardened the action. The other is a nice Winchester highwall with a Badger barrel. All I did to this was caseharden it and change the sights.

Just finished my first build over the Christmas holidays, started this a couple years ago and finally finished it.
Pecatonica left hand Virginia rifle 38" 50cal swamped barrel with iron furniture.
I think it turned out pretty good...what do you think?

The internet contains a wealth of information. Take the time to search out images of originals and study the architectural details. It will go a long way toward producing a reasonably accurate reproduction. I highly recommend joining the American Longrifles forum. Enjoy the ride.

Just finished my latest project.
It is intended to represent a longrifle that might have been built in Augusta County, Virginia between approx. 1760 and 1780 and is my first attempt at an aged finish. The objective was to make it appear well used and well cared for, but not antiqued. I might end up knocking back the shine on the stock and really should do something about the color of the rammer. I might also add some wear to the barrel.
This was a plank build of my design.
The 54 cal. swamped barrel is a 42" Rice Virginia Rifle with round-bottom rifling.
The lock is a Chambers Colonial Virginia Flintlock and the trigger is also a Chambers.
The trigger guard and buttplate are Reaves Goehring's Early Virginia.
Everything else, including the lock and tang bolts, was made in the shop.

The pic of the sight is just there to show that pretty much anything can eventually become useful.
