I have 10 ruger m77 rifles from various dates..... one thing I have noticed is that they seem to put a "rust inhibitor" on them now that is not an oil, and is very sticky........ one of my most recent was an all weather in 7-08...... and it took a bit of effort to get it all off.... it tends to stick to the rifle...... and if it got into the ejector assembly, this may be the case for you.......

Not saying this is your issue, but would be worth a look for sure....... the rugers are crf, so the problem likely isn't in the extractors as that would cause FTF issues as well, but no harm in checking them.....

You can work your ejector by hand easily and feel for grit.......

That sucks a bit. They're selling polymer stocks now and putting one on my rifle would lighten it by almost a full pound.

I had a similar problem,but I replaced the stock firing pin spring with a heavier Wolf spring,polished the internals a bit and have had no further FTF's the past 500 or so rounds.(factory and reloads with CCI primers)

Glad to hear yours was an easy fix!

Mine was FTF with Federal, Winchester and Remington commercial ammo. About 30% Of the time is get "click" as opposed to "bang". It wouldn't even touch off Hirtenberger surplus!

I figured, I could probably fix it, but why? I purchased it new from a dealer, I decided to send it in, as I suspect it's a combo of "largish" headspace and a short firing pin.....

nice gun but why did you quote me in it ?

I looked at the synthetic model for the practicality and weight savings but couldnt get past the cheep feeling of the stock

You asked if the stocks were the same for the 16.5 inch bbl, so i just took a pic of mine so you could see.
 
Posted under H&S arms then saw this thread. Nice. Will throw up a pic. Very nice little rifles. Surprised by the accuracy @ 100 with el cheapo ammo.

So I received the 16.5" scout back from the warranty centre.

All told a bit over 8 weeks.

I measured headspace at 1.638", I assumed that there was something wrong with the bolt/barrel/action combo, as 1.638 should still fire factory ammo. This is the reason I sent it in.

They called me and informed me that the headspace was fine, according to their no-go-gauge. But that the firing pin channel was "filled with gunk" and this was the cause for the misfires. They stated it was test fired with Federal factory ammo and worked as it should.

So after receiving the rifle, I tear the it apart, and take a look see. The serial number is the same as before I sent it out.

A couple things of note....

I dinged up the front sight ear when installing an after market A2 style flash hider. The front sight has been changed, as the ding is no longer present, nor is there any evidence that there ever was a ding.

The headspace now measures 1.634"

So I'm not sure what they actually did to this rifle, but I suspect they swapped the bolt or barrel.

Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but I never was able to give this thing a true accuracy test before I shipped it out for warranty.

I purchased it new in August, shot it a bit, mounted a scout scope and then started having trouble with fail-to-fire etc.

All told I don't think I've fired 30 rounds out of this rifle....

ok I am posting to the EE, but mention here as well. I just got a good deal on a brand new left hand RGSR, but although I can happily shoot either way, I might prefer a right hand as that is what I normally shoot in everything else. Any lefties out there who might want to trade let me know.

Love my Ruger Gunsite Scout. What kind of scout scope options are working? I mounted a cheap AIM 2x7 32 Illuminated to see how a scope would work in the forward position. It is a decent little scope but I expect that it will not hold up. Anyone using a Leupold, Burris or Vortex?

See post #567 for the details, but I have a Burris 2-7X32 Scout on my GSR. First extended eye relief scope I have used. I was a little leery after reading a few negative posts regarding the forward mount setup but I have to admit that I am really please with the way it has turned out. I don't know as the conventional scope I have set up for the same rifle will see a lot of use.
 
Just joined the 'scout' club. After one range trip I was super impressed. My irons were on POA at 50 yards. I glassed it with the vortex 2-7 long eye relief and shot the bullseye out of my target. This is a keeper, and it is going to fast become my favorite. Mine is chambered in 5.56 not 308, but I see me starting to put some cash aside for the 308 to make it my dear/moose gun for the future (maybe even this year). I was almost going to put it back on the wall, I mean a forward mounted optic just seemed weird. But after trying it out I quickly came to see just how awesome it is. it is a little front heavy but a fully loaded mag seems to balance it a little better. I can run that bolt without taking my eye off the target through the optic and that means fast and accurate follow up. The action is a little rough but all the reviews I read indicated that it smooths out over a few sessions, and since mine tend to be on the 100 - 150 rounds per visit mark that shouldn't take too long. Baptism by fire - I'm a convert.
 
Shot my 16" walnut version today. It has a shortened XS rail and a 1-6x 30mm scope in warn QR rings.

But just really wanted to make this 600 post :)
