The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

Ahh, I should be more clear. I am specifically interested in what height would be required to mount the scope with the rear sight still attached ie: low medium, or high. Thx.

I used Leupold QRW medium height rings.

They'll all work with the rear sight, but because the ocular bell on the Vortex Crossfire II scout scope is so large in diameter, it won't clear the rail you'll if you use a low mount. If you use a low mount you'll need to mount the scope to the rear with the ocular bell over the forward part of the receiver opening. It might cause some eye relief problems.

There's a thread over on Scout Rifle Forums regarding this. I'm glad I read it before I ordered my rings.

Awesome, I am glad I asked. Thx.

So do you guys actually like your scout scopes? I've got the leatherwood hi-lux 2-7x32 on mine and I have been out 6-7 times this season for deer already and I can't say I am overly impressed with the scout mounted scope for long-distance (>150 yards) target acquisition.

I picked up a Zeiss Terra 3x 3-9x42 this weekend at WSS to throw on it for conventional scoping needs to see if I like that better.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the scout concept, while capable, isn't meant for long distance target acquisition but rather short distance.

Correct....Cooper's take on the scout design was that it should be "capable of hitting a man size target out to 450 meters with scope or iron sights".... The forward mounted scope is meant for quick target acquisition and to make it easier to load rounds via the chamber.....

I use the 2.5x Leupold for hunting in the timber. For general purpose hunting/target shooting mine wears a Leupold VxR 3-9x40 mounted over the receiver in QD Warne

Great pic = I relate to scoring grouse with a centerfire.

I've been shooting the heads off grouse with that Rem 700 LTR in 6.8spc that I bought off your buddy.

Can anyone help me make a list of the magazines that fit and work in these rifles? I think it'd be good to have reference for people who are just getting into these rifles (like me) and want to know what works and what doesn't.

So far all I have is the metal 3, 5 and 10 round Accurate-Mags and the 3, 5 and 10 round Ruger proprietary polymer mags. What else works in these rifles? Does Magpul make anything that works? Do AICS pattern mags work? Please help.

I think I might have to buy that XS rail for the same purpose.

The only negative with the XS rail is that even with low rings its still adds a fair bit of overall height to the scope set up and that Ruger stock likes lower mounted optics. The GSR is an awesome rifle but there is a better way to make a compact carbine with scope mount options and BUIS by using a small aperture sight on the action bridge that still permits a scope ring (like the talley's or old CZ pop-ups). Ruger could have done this and kept the forward rail instead they created an 'either or' conventional scope OR iron sight situation and XS partially fixed it with a well made but still less than optimal rail in my humble opinion.

Yes, AICS pattern mags, including Magpul Pmag 5 7.62 work.

I'll throw out a pic of mine too. Sitting in the scrub for a bit while the wind pushed the fog through.

GMC403 - Thanks for posting that picture, since that's what mine'll probably look like next year.

I took my first white tail buck on Saturday morning with mine and I can confirm that even though I was successful with the scout scope, I will for sure be removing it next season. When you're standing on shooting sticks and trying to control your heart rate and breathing, while trying to get a cheek weld, I just experienced too much tunnelling and blacking with the long eye relief of my Hilux scout scope. The FOV of the scout scope at 5x zoom also made it hard to pick up the animal at times through the trees.

Wish I had a photobucket account, but all I did as I have zero interest in a scout scope mount (tried it on a marlin) was I cut the XS rail short and took the part that extends out past the receiver off. I have a 3x9x40 vortex mounted in leupold low QRW rings. Shes tight but fits. Thinking about a 2-7 to make the package even more compact

Does anyone have experience firing TSX/TTSX/GMX out of their scouts? If so, what projectiles have you opted to go for - I'm thinking a 130 next year.

I tried some of the Barnes Factory 165 or was it 168gr ttsx loads in my scout. They shot great!....... but it shoots darn near any 308 load great.

For hunting I use the factory Nosler 165gr AB rounds.

*not the Canadian 18.5 version but (16.1 inch, synthetic, 6.25lbs :)

One of the best compact easy to carry guns! Bought one for my dad and he loves it! Very accurate and it's light like a feather. Me carrying my 338 win mag Hog Hunter feels very heavy compared to the Gunsite. Sling-ed over the shoulder, you don't feel the gun lol

It is the new Synthetic stock, 16.1 inch barrel, aluminum bedding, removed the rail, shortened the LOP for his size, removed the brake (useless and loud), gun does not kick AT ALL, Little bit of muzzle flash nothing bad. But it does deliver :) with the 180NP and 168TTSX.

Did I say it's compact? :) Here it is, makes the CZ527 look like a big gun, but packs a lot more power then the x39. Perfect woods gun if you ask me, 2-7x33 Redfield, accu-range, ruger sling ($24 at walmart, does makes the gun carry lighter!!!). We carry back up Rear sight in case, quick switch over.
