The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

Recieved my left hand stainless scout from Wolverine along with a 3 round mag. I was very surprised to find that it came with two ten round polymer mags. Extremely happy!! Can't wait to shoot it this weekend.

Yea I was thinking of going with regular hawlkeye bottom metal and they can add material in the barrel channel to allow for a custom contour. Of so they say

Dont think the recivers are interchangeable, and you would need to remove stock material for the scout barrel to fit.

8/10 rounds were sub MOA, can't complain too much about that!!! Love these Scout rifles

have shot some Aguila 55FMJ that's about it. Accurate enough for plinking, but not as accurate as factory Hornady 55gr SP or handloads

I took my scout scope & rail off last night to mount a 3-9x42mm in the standard position and now have 4 ugly looking holes in my barrel and some marring where the rail was. Does anyone know what can be used to clean up those contact patches (given that it's a matte finished barrel) and if little set screws are available to plug those holes?

that's a MDT (bottom gun w/ laminate), just had to do a bit of file work on it to make it work. I also have the new Ruger 10 round polymer which obviously worked with no mods. Both take a OAL of 2.55" which is awesome. Pic here is with the 75gr Amax loaded .010" off the lands

top gun is the 308 with a 6 round Magpul AICS

The Ruger polymers are really nice for overall length of bullet it seems - my .308 one will accommodate up to 2.90ish.

Testing my reloads this weekend of varget + 150gr TTSX + 210M primers in win brass, the best I could achieve was about 1.5" with both 44.5gr and 45gr (which isn't that great considering I've shot sub MOA with American White Tail 150gr Hornady Interlocks). The 44.5gr had 2 holes almost touching but then my third was a flyer to break the group, and then 45 was a more evenly spaced group. I guess the task this week will be to load more loads at 44.6/44.7/44.8/44.9 to see which shoots the best now that I have narrowed it down to this bracket of powder. Since these loads are compressing my COAL is varying between 2.82" and 2.86"... does anyone know how to better control this?

Also, does anyone have any experience with shooting Hornady 155gr steel match? I was trying to use these to sight in my new scope but they just spray everywhere.

Ratfink, try removing all gilding metal fouling, like from the Hornady 155gr, from the bore and then switch back and stick to copper Barnes bullets. You'll likely see an improvement in accuracy with the Barnes. I would test in 1% increments of case capacity, so for the 308, 0.4gr steps. Any smaller and I doubt you'll see any real difference on the target other than what you will do from group to group

I did a seating depth test in my GSR 5.56 with 3 different bullets. 53gr Vmax, 69gr Sierra TMK, and 75gr Amax. .010', .050", .090", and .130" off the lands. Shot two 3 shot groups of each depth. For the most part they all shot amazing!

Here's the best group, with 75gr Amax. 0.3MOA @ 140 yards

0.78moa average 3 shot group, from 24 groups fired off the bench at 140y, with 3 different bullets and 3 different powders, and 4 different seating depths for each bullet/powder - love this rifle!

Laminate/Blued 16.1" left hand GSR 5.56, XS Rail, Warne QD rings and a Leupold VxR 3-9x40mm CDS

I swapped the scope from 223 onto the 308 and had to come down 11.5MOA and 4.5MOA right to make the 308 shoot on @ 100y

Thanks for the suggestion Todd.
I am going to load 44.5/44.7/45.0 tonight in groups of 5 for testing on hopefully Saturday, I'll post results.

As for the cannelure issue, knowing that my magazine will handle, and the gun will cycle bullets seated and crimped in the second "trough" from the tip of the bullet, I think I will just load to that and call it a day. That way I can have consistent height length without the worry of squeezing the bullet out of the case.

Similar load to mine except i am using AB 150s and 44.5 of 4895. Couldnt quite get back to the half moa i had from last year but still well under 1.5.
