The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

finally got my XS rail for my 5.56 GSR. Ghost ring really easy to get dialed in

I know that gun site does the scout rifle training conference. Has there been anything like it in Canada I think it would be pretty cool if there was.

I have the rail on my 308 and its a sub moa gun, but my bare bone 223 is only around moa, just deciding if i should get another rail or spend more time working a new load.

Assuming proper practice and all, how far would you guys say the GSR could be used as an elk gun? Would you guys be comfortable at 2-300y given the short barrel with 130gr or 150gr TTSXs?

When I had mine scoped I was doing well out to 400 yards, which is my personal limit...... I see no reason why not....

It boils down to what you are comfortable with. A well constructed 150gr such as the tsx would be my personal minimum for the 308win and Elk @ 300y. Most 150gr factory loads run around 2675-2725fps in my 18" scout, 165gr loads are 2550-2600.

Either of those bullet weights with a 200y zero will leave you with about 2 feet of drop at 400y

On a side note. The burning ? For me on what gun would you take in case of emergency was answered. Had 20-30min to evac my home so I grabbed my horses dogs wife and my scout rifle.

I'm very comfortable with a TTSX expanding perfect at 2200 fps impact, somewhat comfortable at 2000 fps. My 150gr TTSX handload from 18.7" Scout is going 2788 fps, so should be good out to 300-425 yards

Better choice for a do-all, any range bullet in the short barrel 308's is the Hornady 178gr ELD-X. It will expand down to 1600 fps, which is about 600 yards

Elk... 180 gr at the distances you've mentioned. 165 at the least.
130 for varmints, 150 for white tail, mullie. Elk is the next level and with those lighter bullets in the .308... might be a chase.

No need to adjust bullet weights for each species/class.

The 150gr TTSX will do it all. My next choice would be a 150gr or 165gr Accubond for a do-all .308 bullet.

My GSR shoots the 150TTSX very well on top of 45gr Varget (its a tight fit)

Cool, thanks guys. This is just hypothetical at this point and my comfortable range is well short of 300-400y because I don't practice enough.

Kayaker - 45gr still needs to be compressed? I'm going to start reloading in the next couple weeks using the 150gr TTSX and Varget so any wisdom would be welcome!

I've seen the 150gr Accubond at work on two big bodied bull elk, results were great. Shots were close, around 50 yards +/-

How many people are using butt pouch/ cheek rest for ammo/storage? Also I currently don't use quick detachable scope rings, couldn't find any at the time of getting the rifle. How many peeps are keeping there scouts to the the principles of the scout rifle genre?

Thanks

No, in Win brass, if I trickle charge it, its not compressed but almost. In Federal brass its compressed no matter what I do.
