The Cooey Make-Over Thread

Had a hiccup with finishing the Cooey 60; apparently I was going a bit too hard with the steel wool between coats; trying to do the final finish with the Tru-Oil conditioner solution went right through to the wood with almost no effort. Now I need to get more Tru-Oil and give it another go, only being more careful.

Live and learn.

Still, I put it back together for the upcoming gopher hunt.

And a better comparison shot:

Mine Looked pretty much identical to Major Sights before I stripped it and cleaned up the barrel.

My Father in-law gave them to me to hold onto he said it was his Dads from the early days when his dad was just a boy. He says well over 10,000 .22 has been put through it. This is the second time the barrel has been re-blue.

I did a BLO finish on the old walnut.

Hope my little girls keep the history going.

Well,

This first pair ain't Cooeys, they're actually a Mossberg 640.....it used to be a butt-stock tube mag fed....now it's been modified a "bit"....and a 10/22....

This second project (on hold due to deployment) is actually a Cooey model 64.....with a dress-up kit.

Woah! The replica Browning, I'm assuming it's legal! Where can I buy one?:D

Well Done Cooey fanatics ! I am currently trying to locate a Cooey 410 here in Ol' Blighty, and they seem to have a few around so I should be in luck, however, all these pictures of Rimfire Cooey's has got me thinking.... Is there anywhere on the site that has a history or list of old Cooey 22lr models? I would especially like a 22lr with some checkering on the handgrip and foreend.

Many Thanks,

rsf

Below is a list. The only 2 Cooey .22's that had checkering on the pistol grip and forearm were the Cooey special single shot and the Cooey Special repeater. These were factory hand checkered guns. I believe these were also available with the Eatonia and possibly Sure Shot brand. I have both the Cooey hand checkered specials (not for sale :D) but they are not very common to find. Of course you could get machine stamped, embossed checkering after Winchester took over on all their models. But if you want the original Cooey, then it is the specials you will have to find.

This is FANTASTIC!! I have a 64 and a 60. Love 'em both. With the 60 however, because it ejects straight up, how do those of you with scopes mounted centerline get around the shells hitting the scope tube and potentially bouncing back down? I see a few with weaver side mounts but they look like they have a weaver base mount that is super curved to center.

Another COOEY 600 resurrected.

I got this gun from a CGN in winnipeg. I was out there working and missed my guns> so a nice member sold me one. I spent some time cleaning it up then brought it home. Few months later i decided to fix the stock since it was not in perfect shape. The gun was worth the work because metal on it was good. So here it is before and after. Finish is true oil...

Does anyone know what model of cooey a sure shot s-l-lr is that is all that is on barrel I just refinished one of these

It depends. Sure Shot was the brand name for Sears. There was a single shot and a tube fed repeater branded this way. It depends also on the age. If a tube fed repeater it is most likely the same as the model 60. If a single shot it is most likely the model 39 or 75. A pic would tell us.

I used to have a 75, my grandfathers. He bought it just after WWII. I left it at my parents when I moved to Niagara and turns out they handed it over to the RCMP when they moved back to Canada. My father doesn't have his PAL and he didn't know that I still wanted it. At least he got some piece of crap camera for his turning it in.

some of you guys have re-done the blue on these old guns. I seen some really shiny finishes. Is it hot blue or cold blue and what is the trick to make it shine like this? I have an old canuck JR i am working on for my 4yo niece but i want it to look really nice..
please advise..
