The fading .40 S&W

i think the switch back to 9 has less to do with it being better or equal to that of the .40. as others have mentioned the same technology is also available for .40 rounds. the issue is more that it's now good enough to fill the shoes of a standard .40 round without the special bullets. since 9mm fills the requirements, they're switching back for cost savings and of course capacity.

40, 9mm and 45 shoots you dead with an accurate shot. I have all 3 of these calibers and enjoy them all... These stupid debates come up every week. Let the fights begin cou:

I never understood the claim about .40 being snappy.
I'm a skinny guy with fairly limited upper body strength, yet I can hardly see a difference between 9mm and .40 in terms of recoil.
I have no problem with the fact that someone decided that I'll be carrying a pistol chambered in this caliber on my duty belt.
I wouldn't be whining about carrying 9 mm either, even though I believe that .40 is better round all around.

A few years ago I took some Sri Lankan friends to the range. The wife was (and still is) a tiny thing, not much over five feet tall and very thin. I started her on a .22 and she handed it back after a couple of shots because it was "too wimpy". She did the same thing with a 9 mm CZ 75. Then I gave her my .40 Steyr and she happily blasted through two boxes of ammunition. Meanwhile, her equally short but amazingly strong husband was busy chewing the bullseye out of his target with a .357, shooting better than I ever have despite the fact that he had never shot before.

I like the big show of the 45 and I like light recoil of the 9mm... since I can afford to own both, there is no reason to own a "compromise calibre".

This is exactly how I feel. The analogy I often make is I have a sports car and an SUV so I don't need a station wagon. .40 just does nothing for me (I feel it can't do anything a quality 9mm can't do but it's much snappier and thus harder to shoot)... but I respect everyone's preferences. Having said that, if you only have one car, I can see why some people would want the station wagon.

Ya i had a Glock .40sw it was damn snappy and hard to use compared to the 9mm i use at work. Hell the Glock 21 i fired shot nicer than that .40sw.

Nothing I've ever read has convinced me there is a huge difference between in terms of terminal ballistics.

Compare wound cavities through gel all day but nothing changes the fact that 9mm, .40, and .45 are all far more similar to one another than any particular one is to .223. There just isn't some huge edge to be found there when you consider concessions made in capacity. It's all just marketing.

Personally, it's just a non-issue to me. I shoot 9mm and 7.62x25 because it's the cheapest :).

While I have no issues with my G22 and love it, I will be getting a G17/19 between now and Christmas. Everyone around me shoots 9mm and its much more fun to be shooting OPA.

But hey, whatever floats your boat. Most people on here are better served with what they like the best.

Id love a G19 any idea who is bringing these in still?

Police departments are going back to the 9 so they can get higher scores on range qualification, that's what I'am reading.

I second this...

Trainer. Gun(s) / Caliber

Travis Haley Glock 17 9mm (also 9mm M&P)
Massad Ayoob Glock 17 9mm
Chris Costa S&W M&P 9mm
Larry Vickers Glock 17/19 9mm
Gabe Suarez Glock 17 9mm
Rob Pincus 9mm (recommends a variety of handguns in this caliber)
Paul Gomez (RIP) Glock 17/19 9mm
James Yeager Glock 19 9mm
Andy Stanford Glock 19 9mm
Kelly McCann Glock 19 9mm
Jason Falla Glock 17 9mm
Michael Janich Glock 17 9mm
Dave Spaulding Glock 19 9mm (sometimes Ruger SR9c)

I own all 3, that being said there are many reasons for going with each different caliber.

Cost
Person size
Training issues

On that list I see guys running there classes with 9mm because it is more affordable to shoot 9mm than 40 S&W or 45ACP.

I prefer shooting 45ACP because it is more fun to shoot, but for training purposes or say actually real use it depends on the circumstances.

All guns are made for many different reasons and they are specific in duties and mission, the criteria may vary so there is no simple answer or one answer..

"...cost..." You can stop right there. Nothing else matters. Police budgets have stalled Stateside too. And cops there don't get anywhere near the wages paid here.
"...they can practice..." Very few cops ever practice. Most know absolutely nothing about firearms and don't want to.
"...caliber to hate on before .40..." Nope. It was the 9mm.

On the other hand, if there's ever a severe ammo shortage .40 might be more available than 9mm or .45. Same could be said for .357 Sig. Hehe.

Having a .40 on hand in case I can't find 9mm component bullets is the primary reason I have decided to keep my .40 Browning Hi Power. That being said, I have also ordered a 9mm conversion barrel for it in order to have a spare 9mm pistol.

.357 SIG serves no equivalent purpose, as anytime I have bullets to load it, I also have bullets to load 9mm. 9mm brass is also plentiful and essentially free, whereas .357 SIG brass is rare and expensive.

It's because Glocks KABOOM with anything bigger than 9mm :nest:
