The Freedom Ordnance FX-9 OWNERS thread.

Ordered an FX-9 and am waiting to take delivery. Gun will be shipping tomorrow but I've just recently found this thread and noticed that the FX-9 may not be a great fit for me as a left handed shooter. I see some guys have made some crude (no offence) gas deflectors for them while others seem to just deal with eating the gas from the blowback? Curious if I should be calling first thing tomorrow to cancel this order and just step to a JR carbine even though I really prefer the looks of the FX-9? Any south paws able to offer up some advice?

I am a lefty shooting the FX-9. No brass or gas issues of any consequence. I do get a good bit of smudge on my inner right forearm from where I am holding the firearm, but its not anything soap and water can't deal with.

So I had my FX-9 on the range for the first time today. Put 100 rounds downrange and it performed well for the most part.

Main issue is that the bolt hold seems to be weak and the bolt will release by itself when inserting a fresh magazine. It happened maybe 3-4 times during the day and caused a feed issue the first time. I'm using a magpul Pmag and the included magazine.

It should also be noted that after the first incident I was gentle when inserting the magazines being careful not to really hit anything.

Any ideas on what I can look for? Would trying some true Glock made magazines change anything? Or is this an issue with the FX-9s bolt catch system?

My bolt won't hold open on empty Glock mags but does with Magpul mags.

Mine is usually similar, I ran another 100 rounds through mine yesterday and 4 out of 4 of my Glock brand mags worked 100%, I find the Glock mags to feed reliably but the BHO is around 50%. Other brand mags all work 100%.

KCI Korean mags and Pmags seem to be the best in the FX-9.

Wolff makes +10% springs for glock mags, mississaugagunnut mentioned them earlier in this thread.
I did a quick google, some shops up here that seem to carry them.

Just MAKE SURE you order the springs for the dedicated 10 round mags... the spring in a standard mag with a pin limiting it to 10 rounds is not the same as the spring in the purpose-designed 10 round versions. The 10 round Glock mags are essentially a single stack internally and the spring is narrower...

Wolff makes +10% springs for several capacities of glock mags, all the way up to the 33rders. Do they only function correctly with unpinned mags?

I noticed on mine the nut that holds down the assembly for the bolt hold open was a pretty tight and as a result it was pushing down on the bolt hold open assembly and as a result it wasn't able to move as freely as it should so I loosened it up and played with it to find where it was snug but allowed the hold open to freely rotate and i have had zero issues at all.

Just had it out and sighted it in with my new holosun green dot I was shooting it at 50 yards with blazer brass 124 gr and 147 gr and it did not like the 124 at all but it was getting average of 1290 FPS but was all over the place

The 147 blazer brass shot way better with it averaging 1180 FPS but at 50 yards with a dot sight and old man eyes it shot very well I thought definitely a lot better then the 124 gr

Well i had inserted pics but guess there is issues with that for some reason it didn't show up, Try this with a link instead

So hopefully this isn't a stupid question but why does the fx-9 come with a card recommending mostly 115g ammo be run through it? I've only put 100 rounds through mine and they were all blazer 124g and I was going to move to the 115g.

I’ve found in the full capacity mags with a pin the spring can get hung up on the pin...but it’s not been fatal for me yet...it just pops back up.

The issue with the dedicated 10 round mags is that the spring is narrower because the inside of the mag is blocked by thick ridges essentially creating a single stack inside the mag. Regular capacity springs will be too wide. Wolf makes springs specifically for the 10 round mags.

Inside of a G19 10 round mag (the G17 is the same design, just a little longer, obviously...):

I think it's because the 115 and 124 are round nose while the 147 are flat nose and might have feeding issues but I had zero issues I upgraded my buffer spring to a geissele 42 with a h2 buffer and no issues at all so far this gun has ran flawless 115 steel cased 124 and 147 I put my AR scope on it tonight next time I'll try to shoot for more accuracy but this gun is an awesome buy so far

Be careful with the steel case ammo, the manual says not to run it and somewhere back in this thread there was someone who had problems with it in his rifle. I don't remember the details and don't feel like searching back through 30+ pages. Hopefully someone can find it or remembers it and can provide more details.

Ya steel is what they recommend using actually Aluminum is the one they say not to use

From the Freedom Ordinance website:

AMMUNITION
9mm 115 gr. FMJ recommended/select hollow points. We recommend starting with with the following ammunition: 115 gr. FMJ Tulammo®, 115 gr. FMJ MAGTECH®, 115 gr. FMJ Wolf®, 124 gr. JHP SIG SAUER® Elite Performance, PMC® Bronze, 115 gr. American Eagle®, 115 gr. Federal®, 115 gr. Remington®. The FX-9 upholds Xtreme reliability with a wide range of ammo including many hollow point designs for self defense and full metal jacket. We do not recommend the use of non jacketed ammunition as unprotected lead can cause fouling and buildups that plated and jacketed bullets do not. Do not use aluminum case ammunition in your FX-9!!
