The GSG 16 modification thread

^^^ Looks great, good job.

Honest question for everyone, are these guns worthy of the ~$1000 investment to get them to the MP5 level?

Conversion kits, 9" barrels, sights, charging handles, stocks, handguards etc. all add up pretty fast.

I have resisted the hype so far but with the news Dlask is manufacturing several hundred more barrels I have begun to wonder if one can get $1000 worth of fun out of one of these.

How is the build quality of the base models?

Depends on how much you like the MP5s, how close to one you're prepared to go (the GSG-5 conversion kits have dried up), and how handy you are.

It was for me and probably will be again

People go on vacations and spend 3 x more on "memories"

I really wanted a MP5 so I'm still spending money on mine to make it "as" close a MP5 as I can. I even bought another GSG, because I ruined a receiver shaving it down, and then paid for BL to replace the messed up GSG receiver.

Nothing wrong with the base models. They shoot great and are pretty reliable. I haven't had issues with mine yet and the second one I bought used with an unknown round count was the same.
My favorite rifle is an MP5 and since we can't have the real deal, this will have to do. It's also fun for those who like to modify, tinker, and make the rifle your own. Lots of ICS airsoft stuff will fit with modification. And you can still buy the lowers from the states while they last. This is good to know since the conversion kit is discontinued and the prices of them have skyrocketed.

Thanks for the answers. I have no shortage of money pit guns that I have thrown more dollars at replacing parts than what the original firearm cost, all in pursuit of making it "better," but have learned over the years to at least start with something that is reliable and of reasonable quality out of the box. I haven't held one of these yet and they just look pretty dinky and made of plastic, hence my question about if they were any good to start with. Some cool looking guns in this thread, and rimfire is a great way to kill an afternoon and not destroy your bank account in ammo prices.

Shot my 1st 9mm MP5 in the US years ago, shot Sterlings, Thompsons, but the MP5 ergonomics just felt right, wanted an MP for years, but knew that would never happen.

Then the GSG16 came out!

I actually bought the GSG 522 kit before buying my GSG 16, and started a gradual build. While the GSG 16 was fun, ran awesome as my son's GSG STG44/22, it was too much plastic for my tastes. Then I ordered a first run Dlask 9" barrel, MP5 stock and handguard, rear site, then started my build.

Added a bit a weight to the hollow stock feels pretty close now to what I remember except of course for that wonderful 9mm snap, but it's cheap to shoot and now a friends and family favorite for new and experienced shooters, but man is it loud with that Dlask barrel. The magazines are great and easier to load then the STG44/22.

Was it worth it? Yes! I have lots of people asking if I wll part with it, who knows? If the price is right maybe, but I am in no hurry to sell it.

Well. I may as well post mine up. The extension kit and handguard have been 3D printed and painted. Need the conversion kit or a similar charging tube for this to work correctly. Silly faux suppressor wasn't cutting it for me.

Haha, MP5s are so passe now!
Congrats on the build looks incredible

Here is my HK G33 replica that I am finishing right now.

Fully adjustable steel bipod attached to wide handgaurd with steel frontend (for bipod mount)

Almost done, just finalizing the assembly. I have a full steel and aluminum collapsible stock that will allow my girls to fit it better than my MP5 without the adjustable stock.

I think that this is a good place to post this. It isn't about a completed GSG, it definitely isn't finished. It's more about about the effects of some modifications. I recently got my 9" barrel with trunnion. I'm still waiting on a flash hider, forearm and some other goodies to come. What I was most concerned about was how well my GSG would function after the changeover and also, would I lose accuracy with this barrel modification.
So, in spite of the fact the rifle is incomplete, here is what I found.

Rifle as it is at the moment. Waiting for more parts. Thorsbear? Thorsbear?

So, my first concern was function. Extraction can be an issue apparently. When I was assembling my barrel/trunnion it was suggested that you insert an empty cartridge in the chamber (prior to installing in the rifle), press the bolt over the trunnion, and then pull it off. If the case comes out with the bolt, the extractor is aligned with the extractor groove. If it doesn't, they recommended filing out the notch. Didn't really want to do that so was happy when the case came out when i pulled the bolt away from the chamber.
Completed the assembly of the rifle and headed off to the range. Loaded up a mag and pulled the trigger. Bang with positive extraction/ejection. Pulled the trigger again. Same result. Did the whole mag with no issues. During the shooting session this afternoon I only had 2 failures to feed out of about 150 rounds. Not one extraction issue. I think it was the ammo. Only happened with that brand.
Now came concern #2. Would it be as accurate as the original barrel? I have been quite pleased with the accuracy of the original barrel. Shoots very well with most ammo. So, here's the results with 3 different types of ammo and a new 9" barrel.
All groups were shot at 20 meters from a rest. I used a Holosun red dot. Not as precise as a scope but this is what I will be using so I went with that.
5 shots with Federal Match ammo.

Based on these results, I am quite satisfied with the accuracy of this barrel. Mini Mags will be my cartridge of choice, hands down. I also set up a 6 inch gong at 25 yds. If you missed it was your fault. Double and triple taps were quite easy and a lot of fun.
So, I'm glad I made the change. Gun looks great with no loss of accuracy or function. Now, to finish it!! Thorsbear? Thorsbear?

Rugerman!

Looks great, congrats on the new barrel
I've got something almost ready for that GSG of yours.

See your inbox tonight lol

I am assembling another GSG 16 short barrel build right now with some new ideas.
I'll post up the new build shortly

What have you put on the 2nd one, love the look. Getting my first GSG, this week. Lucked out and got a dlask barrel today.

Hello Cturcot
I just wanted to build an old school style MP5 like the rest of us in this thread. Thanks for the comments

What's the OAL with the 9" barrels, excluding muzzle devices? Are their varying fixed stock options to reduce LOP? The MP5 fixed stocks always looked kind of long to me but I've never held one, and I don't know if OAL restriction would allow Canadians any options anyway.

Woohoo! New one is below. Added a Navy lower and playing with a steel and aluminum MP5A3 stock (not fitted yet just placed for photos).

Thorsbear, that looks great man! Love that MP5 A3 stock. Is that the GSG 522 version or real MP5? Last real one I saw sold for $1100! I am trying out something similar but B&T mp5 version.

Hello Shurick,
Your B&T is awesome (and what is that 5 position adjustable?)

The MP5A3 stock that I am using is the VCF GBB V2 model. It's a direct copy of the HK including the slide lock and dissasembly procedures. Funny that they copied HK in making it a one position locking but didn't upgrade it to a 4 position :)

I'll take some closeups so you can see it better and show the issues with fitting it to a GSG16 (nothing unsurmountable)

My plan is to mill in additional notches to make the stock a 4 position adjustable for the kids and mount it to my G33 GSG16 rifle project

I picked up a navy trigger housing like yours, very nice thanks for the tip!

Cheers

What are you guys doing for flash hiders? Are there any airsoft pieces that will do the job on a dlask 9 incher? I'm loathe to pay almost $100 bucks and would love a cheaper option.
