The GSG 16 modification thread

i have officially gone through all 170 pages of this thread, over 3 days. I just picked up a GSG16 2 days ago, new R/PAL Licensee. Gonna be fun to see where this leads me. Looks like a solid choice of firearm to mod. I have a problem keeping anything stock

Rock and roll!
Such a fun rifle to mod, enjoy!

GSG16 - 9" freshly converted!

Got rid of the M16 style oversized flash hider on the GSG16 9" factory. The original flash hider makes the rifle look super long after all the work to make it have a 9" barrel.

MP5 style (aluminum)! Ignore the Swarf from the turning of the part. Will clean up fine

Working today some more on the GSG16-9
I've been wanting to have a trilug attached to really shorten the look and think I have a solution

Thats more like it!

This is just a mockup right now on another of my GSG16-9s.

I found someone selling a GSG522 conversion with the MP5K cocking tube in town. I call it the GSG16K lol
I need to get a real looking shorter fake suppressor and finish the mounts for the MLOK. Other than that, this thing is pretty much ready to go

It feels awesome to hold with the aluminum front grip! Compact and held tight to body

The stock is all steel, aluminum and polymer and has been modified to no longer retract. Still clears the N/R length requirement. I wanted to use this stock on a 16"barrel model but it is based on a real MP5 receiver that uses narrower tracks for the arms. It felt sloppy when adjusting so there is not loss to making it fixed.

I'll post up more photos when complete.

Thinking of getting a GSG-16, one with the 9" factory barrel.
Would you folks recommend replacing the telescoping stock with a fixed?
thanks

The stock on the GSG 16-9 is well made but not really that adjustable. The shortest setting is pretty much normal LOP, full extension is not really usable (way too long). Try it out first to see how it fits you

I bow before your superior GsG mods sir is there a chance that 522 kits will be made again? Don’t have my GsG 16 yet and if my wallet( and wife) allow I want one of each of the iconic mp5s ( regular old school mp5 clone, SD clone and a mp5k clone with the side folding stock) any options for making clones becides sourcing a used 522

The 522 kits are gone and done. No worries I think I can help :)
I'll pm you tonight

The only issue with the MP5K replicas are that you need to keep 26" overall length OAL or you'll need to reclassify as a restricted 22 Rifle.

I was planning on modifying the classic k folding stock so it’s non folding and using a fake suppressor shroud

What are people using these days for cocking tube assembly's? I see HLD has the printed ones, but i'd love something metal/higher quality. I'm going to grab my first gsg 16 soon and have done some mods in the past. Perfect winter project!

So I have finally finished reading all 18 pages of this thread (or 171 pages if you are a rookie and have it set to 10 post per page).
I am truly impressed at some of the ingenuity of the members here. I had always looked over the GSG 16 as it was just not quite MP5 enough. Then I stumbeled across this thread and saw the possibilites.
I have ordered a 16" which should be here in the next few days. I have order a CYMA collapsable stock and I am looking for some of the conversion pieces.
After seeing some of the 9" build with full stocks I was really impressed with just how well they mimic the MP5 that I have decided to try and grab a 9" when they go on sale aswell.

Ebay has a conversion kit right now for $350 which is crazy $$$ so I think I will pass.
A few questions for any one out there willing to answer;
-Does the Magpul MP5 lower fit or is there a lot of midification required?
-Does any one have a souce for the cocking tube/front sight? Is any one interested in selling one or two?
-Is the HLD cocking tube worth a try or is it a waste of time.

Thorsbear, is the Mlok hand guard you have on some of your builds the MDI hang guard and if so does it require any modifications?

Does anyone know who makes and/or where I can get an adapter to turn the convert threads of the factory 9" barrel to standard 1/2 x 28" threads to replace the faux flash hider?

Thanks

The factory GSG16-9 does not come with a threaded barrel, only the Dlask GSG 16 has it.

The M16 style flash hider on the GSG16-9 is threaded into the plastic cocking tube assembly.

Thanks for that information I didn't realize the plastic cocking tube assembly was what the flash hider actually threaded into.

I've ordered a NOS GSG 5 .22 cast steel cocking tube apexgunparts.com/german-gsg-5-22-cocking-tube-housing-new.html

Do you know if that happens to have the threads for the m16 flash hider or if i'll need to run a bare barrel?

If i decide to use the factory plastic cocking tube do you know of an adapter that will thread into the plastic cocking tube and allow me to install a 1/2x28" muzzle device or thread protector and get rid of that m16 style flash hider?
