John, I met Authur a couple of times at his home. What a gentleman.
James, I never met him. I have guns that he worked on. He died in 2017 I believe. I do know a lot of people who had dealings with him or were his friend, and invariably they would describe him as a fantastic wizard and as you said, a gentleman. He was universally adored from what I gather.
A postscript to the earlier gun case post: Scott tells me Arthur made him a step-by-step photo journal of making a case for a customer's Purdey from beginning to finish. I'm trying to get my hands on it and hope to digitize the images to share here.
hello all...Looking for case restoration (shop / person) ... any recommendations?
Hmmm. That's a hard one. I know a guy in Toronto. You will pay more than the finished case is worth, it will take 3 years minimum and the workmanship will be outstanding.
Aaahhh. Any way to contact this person?
I was looking at this persons work - https://instagram.com/gile_gun_cases?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
That guy, Kade, apprenticed with Marvin Huey, who is the top case maker in the US. His cases start around $2500 usd. If you went on Double Gun forums and asked how to get in touch with Kade Gile, who used to work with Marvin Huey, someone there would have contact info.
I hate to put you on a track that will drive you nuts ie the guy in Toronto. If anything I am understating the length of time and the cost. I've left cases with him, given up after 2 years and gone back to find the case exactly where I set it down when I first dropped it off. The guy's main work is ultra high end custom leather work typically for corporate clients. So the case repair stuff is simply done when he's got nothing better to do.

If you are going to do the resto yourself there is an exceedingly good, detailed step by step diy thread at Doublegun. By a member named Damascus. Ernie (Damascus) is English, worked in the gun trade and is extremely helpful. If you can’t find it let me know. It’s a few years old now.

I'll take that vanilla off your hands if you change your mind.
Can't help you with choosing. I would love to see you post here with progress installments on your case. Before and afters would be much appreciated Mr. Beesley. I have a restoration of my own to start soon.
I'm having trouble with this case from the UK. I've agreed to the price and the seller has given me a shipping cost but ebay won't let me put it in the cart because it contends the seller won't ship to Canada. We'll sort it out. My favourite colour? Royal purple like the old Crown Royal bottle bags.
Some of the Scottish makers used fine leather lining material, pigskin or kid usually and usually a natural or tan or grey colour. It stood up well but stained easily and was difficult to clean. I have had a couple of cases with beige baize ( sorta rhymes) lining, always looked soiled and grubby. The traditional colours were most used for a reason and many makers standardized on one colour unless a customer specified different. If the lining in your Beesley case is original I would try to match it as closely as possible. Don’t destroy the old label, if you do ‘t reuse it someone wants it.
