The Gun Case Thread

John, I met Authur a couple of times at his home. What a gentleman.

James, I never met him. I have guns that he worked on. He died in 2017 I believe. I do know a lot of people who had dealings with him or were his friend, and invariably they would describe him as a fantastic wizard and as you said, a gentleman. He was universally adored from what I gather.
A postscript to the earlier gun case post: Scott tells me Arthur made him a step-by-step photo journal of making a case for a customer's Purdey from beginning to finish. I'm trying to get my hands on it and hope to digitize the images to share here.

Wow! That would be a treasure!

Aaahhh. Any way to contact this person?

I was looking at this persons work - https://instagram.com/gile_gun_cases?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

That guy, Kade, apprenticed with Marvin Huey, who is the top case maker in the US. His cases start around $2500 usd. If you went on Double Gun forums and asked how to get in touch with Kade Gile, who used to work with Marvin Huey, someone there would have contact info.

I hate to put you on a track that will drive you nuts ie the guy in Toronto. If anything I am understating the length of time and the cost. I've left cases with him, given up after 2 years and gone back to find the case exactly where I set it down when I first dropped it off. The guy's main work is ultra high end custom leather work typically for corporate clients. So the case repair stuff is simply done when he's got nothing better to do.

Thanks for all the constant help and guidance. :)

I am starting the restoration project on my own with help and guidance available from members @ Double Gun forums. There is a wealth of information there and thankyou for pointing me in that direction...

If you are going to do the resto yourself there is an exceedingly good, detailed step by step diy thread at Doublegun. By a member named Damascus. Ernie (Damascus) is English, worked in the gun trade and is extremely helpful. If you can’t find it let me know. It’s a few years old now.

I am following exactly that post :)...

I'll take that vanilla off your hands if you change your mind.
Can't help you with choosing. I would love to see you post here with progress installments on your case. Before and afters would be much appreciated Mr. Beesley. I have a restoration of my own to start soon.

Okie! I am 50% leaning towards the red and 50% on doing something very different…

Yes; I will be doing before and afters in detail. Right now the case is getting some (re)stitching care at a leather shop in Toronto.

I have to say the leather cleaner + 50-50 mix of pure neatsfoot oil & cod liver oil & then Blackrock Leather Conditioner has done wonders for the leather on the case overall especially the straps.

What are you restoring? What colour will you pick?
What is the most unique colour that you have seen till date?

I'm having trouble with this case from the UK. I've agreed to the price and the seller has given me a shipping cost but ebay won't let me put it in the cart because it contends the seller won't ship to Canada. We'll sort it out. My favourite colour? Royal purple like the old Crown Royal bottle bags.

Aaahh; yeah. I am sure you and the seller can settle on the side.
That is def the colour of Royalty! Good choice.

Some of the Scottish makers used fine leather lining material, pigskin or kid usually and usually a natural or tan or grey colour. It stood up well but stained easily and was difficult to clean. I have had a couple of cases with beige baize ( sorta rhymes) lining, always looked soiled and grubby. The traditional colours were most used for a reason and many makers standardized on one colour unless a customer specified different. If the lining in your Beesley case is original I would try to match it as closely as possible. Don’t destroy the old label, if you do ‘t reuse it someone wants it.

Interesting, the leather shop kept insisting that I consider replacing baize with leather but somehow it did not sit right with me.
The lining seems to be original; and I am babying the label. It has the matching serial no, shot loads info etc. It is peeling nicely with the steamer, though I haven't removed it yet. I just covered it with a thin plastic sheet to protect it from any damage while at the leather shop. The shop was also requested to ensure no damage comes to it.

I feel, beige and any lighter colour for that matter would attract and show any dirt / stains etc easily. I def want to keep the lining in a shade of red colour but wanted to gather some insight on alternates based on experience.

I still have two-three weeks before I pick the case from the shop. I will initiate the interiors then…

One thing I have to say; Blackrock Leather Conditioner was a game changer in terms of the amount of life it breathed into the leather; but at the same time, it made the leather a tad (just a bit) darker. It is a neutral cream but still…

You all may be aware of this already, but thought I would share nevertheless.

I have no issues with the result.
