The Hunter Marksman Challenge - use your hunting rifle!

I'm willing to try this challenge for fun and if you still need results?

Pretty neat challenge!

I like the fact you have different target shapes, makes it more challenging/different

Would love any/all results from all your tries! Would also love for you to bring out a couple of buddies...:) Once I get a bit more baseline data I'll start posting some of the practice challenges that use the other targets.

Cheers, and I can't wait to see what you come back with!

Great, right on, so i will do the standard 8" target as stated in your original Post and then will try with the different Animal Silhouette's you provided!

In the interest of not losing brass in the snow I completed the challenge with a Browning lever gun in 22LR. I was able to land nine hits out of ten on target in 46 seconds. I will repeat this test in centrefire as soon as the situation permits as well as provide video.

I go some more 30-30 loaded up for another go. 165g lead cast this time
Still got to load up some more 375ruger for the test. See if I can handle 10 full power shotsin about a Minute

That is an awesome score! Oh the joys of no reload...;)

Can't wait to see what you come back with using your center fire rifle.

Cheers, and thanks for participating!

Fear of losing expensive brass added approx 45 seconds to my time; I swears it.

Gonna go out this week and shoot the animal targets with my .22

Well I had a kid free, wife free morning so I headed to the range. I have to say I was hoping to do a little better, seems I am in need of more practice with my marlin!!

Rifle used: 70's vintage Marlin 336 35 Rem shooting 200gr Hornady RN over 45gr of LVR, sights are XS ghost ring.
Time looks like 92 sec

Did you catch the flinch at about 1:20? I should have started my morning with the challenge instead of finishing it with it. I just got done with 100rds heavy 12ga and 40rds sighting in my 270WSM. My shoulder was getting a little soar. Plus 45gr LVR is a full load, maybe I'm just a big sissy and need to shoot more.

I think that is a great score for a lever gun with iron sights too! Results entered, many thanks!

Hey folks!

With spring around the corner, why don't we all go black bear hunting sometime this month? How about this:

You're walking into your hunting stand location...as you come around a bend on the cutline your walking you see a nice bear about 200 yards away working the ant hills along the edge of the trees. With lots of tall dead canary grass along the edge of the trees, it's virtually impossible to lay down for a good prone shot so despite the wind being at your back, you decide to try and get closer. Well, you make it about 50 yards and then the bear stands to take a look and totally sees you.

It's now or never!

Instructions:

  • Set up black bear target at 25 yards
  • Fire two rounds at bear target - one from standing position, one from kneeling position
  • Repeat 5 times for a total of 10 rounds fired
  • Unlimited time between 2 shot relays, but try and insert some urgency between your standing shot and your kneeling shot.
  • Optional - measure time between "go!" and report of second round. Report back total time elapsed in seconds for all 10 shots.
  • Scoring - shots at least half way in the scoring zone = 1. Shots outside = 0. Maximum possible score = 10
  • Submit feedback to Brobee about this month's challenge. Share in this thread if you'd like.
  • Optional - Re-run baseline challenge on 100 yard 8 inch bull
  • Recruit a friend!

I'm going to get out this weekend with a mini-30, a CZ 527 in 7.62x39, the .22lr, and my CZ550 ebony. Range report to follow...:)

Cheers,

Brobee

Hey Folks...

Just curious as to general preference re target style - who likes the line-art-cartoon-style, or would you rather shoot monochromatic-wood-cut style:

sample_targets.jpg

I still have to illustrate the scoring zones, and they'd be designed such that you could not see them past 10 yards so you have to use your knowledge of animal anatomy to find them through your sights/scope. I'd also have to scale them appropriately that you could print them on your laser printer. The only kicker is that I think they would be way cooler if they were printed big on 11x17 or even better 14x22...:( Would have to find way to ship them to folks and I think that would kill the project.

Thoughts?

Looks good brobee. I like the woodcut style; as you know from my PM's I am very interested in the half sized targets.

I found the gray targets a lot harder to pick up with iron sights; my printer also gave me some psychedelic pink elk when it ran out of black ink.
