The M1 Garand Build Thread

I am working on my second build and near completion. Just curious to know how many others are still building? Thread does not seem as busy and talking with a retailer they said they were not selling many receivers since parts are getting harder to find. I picked up a third receiver for the future and hope that I can still find the parts.

Got two done. I did my part lol.

If they were cheaper to build I would do more. They are fun.

The cheap receivers are a big temptation at $50 a pop. It's the other parts that are getting expensive and hard to find. You are looking at $1220-$1400 to round up the other parts and the crappy exchange rate isn't helping.

j[/IMG]Here's mine. The donor rifle for parts was a Springfield WW2 vintage. I moved all the parts to a Breda receiver. Bubba tried to install a side mount scope on the original Springfield receiver. They drilled about six or seven holes with a hand drill and tried to tap the egg shaped holes. I couldn't save the original receiver without major tig welding and heat treating. I guess they were cheap enough back then that they didn't worry about it.
I wanted more of a Y2K Garand look so that's why I went with a laminated stock. I guess you either love the look or hate it. I'm open to offers.

Sorry Purple I wasn't implying that that was your technique I was just making a general statement to those who want to try it out themselves who have never done it before.

Another point to add also is that different reamers can certainly give different results.
My PTG reamer actually rarely headspaces the same as a go gauge with the bushing they provided, I could order a shorter one but I'd still use the same technique so it works for me.

I have PTG pull through reamer and a set of Clymer Go and No Go gauges.
When I finish reamed my short chambered barrel at one of Barneys M14 clinics we stripped the bolt and slowly reamed the chamber a turn or 2 at a time, cleaned the chamber and tried to close on the Go Gauge. We continued to cut a little at a time until the locking lugs on the bolt fully engaged.
We didn't cut the chamber till the reamer stops cutting.
I lapped the bolt for good engagement prior to cutting the chamber

I just bought a receiver from srfc and I was looking to buy a kit to finish it. I found kits in 308 and 30-06. Obviously 308 is more common and 30-06 more traditional. I'm leaning toward 308 but are the receivers the same?

Except the barrel are there any modifications needed to run a 308 Garand vs a 30-06? Are the enbloc clips the same ? Any reliability issue because the 30-06 isn't the same length?

I'm a total newbe to Garand as I'm more a black rifle/pistol guy. Ar15 seem easier to build lol

The receivers are the same. Just remember to buy an adjustable gas plug if you are shooting commercial grade ammo or you will run the risk of damaging your expensive Op Rod. The Enblocs are interchangeable as well. There are many YouTube videos you will find helpful in the Garand from the history to the building. Good luck and remember to post photos of your build.

The builds are identical. You would need to finish ream either barrel with its respective reamer and check the head space but thats it. I would suggest installing a block in the bullet guide to prevent an accidental loading of 30.06.

Adjustable gas bloc are needed for commercial 30-06 if I understand correctly because the specs today are not the same vs 1940.

I don't need an adjustable gas bloc if I go 308 way?

GaS plug

just put 2 on the ee , think I have some enblocks left too. check my ad .

Well I guess I can add a couple that I did so far. My first on a Danish receiver. Regretfully I sold it shortly after the build was completed to a fine CGN'er. I hope he is enjoying it.
