The M1 Garand Build Thread

You re-blued the parts? why not parkerize them?

I know. I cheated a bit with cold-blue (birchwood casey stuff). cou:
I don't have a proper bluing or park setup... :(

I've found that it works REAL well when you sandblast the parts.

Do you have an idea how to refinish the gas cylinder, or know someone that can do it ?

The easiest and most economical way to refinish a gas cyl is to use high temp flat black cylinder head paint. Spray on and bake in the oven per instructions. This works very well, but is not impervious to the more aggressive bore cleaners. You could also use a stainless steel blackening solution. This is expensive, hard to find and a bit more tricky. A custom metal re-finishing shop might be set up to blacken a gas cyl. If you do use the spray on paint you need to plug both ends of the cylinder as well as the area around the gas port and splines to prevent a build up of paint on the interior surfaces. I use the spray paint method for the gas cyl and the stainless steel blackener for the gas cyl locks and screws.

Always thought the gas cylinder were stainless steel and left unfinished cause they wouldn't take parkerizing ? I know I've never seen anything else.

Grizz

The gas cylinders are stainless, and they were either gas-deposit black-oxidized, or copper-plated and blackened chemically when new. It's VERY difficult to replicate. Some guys just paint them, I tend to only use ones in my builds with the finish mostly intact and live with the faults.

Urrgh… looks like the litany of thrown together (with questionable ability) M1's based on these Italian receivers has started to hit he EE.

Need I say more?

WTF? How is it even possible to install the liner like that? Even installed upside down it shouldn't be sitting that close to the bottom of the handguard.

Before going to the trouble of refinishing a gas cyl or a gas cyl screw make sure that they are serviceable/re-usable. A poor mans wear gauge for the interior of the gas cyl is to use a fired magnum rifle ctg case inserted base first into the rear of the cyl. It shouldn't go more than a third of the way in. Check the interior face of the gas cyl screw for a crack. If cracked, it is unserviceable as it will bleed gas. Also, the poppet spring should be checked for tension. You can clean/de-grease the interior of the screw by pressing the front face of the poppet valve (bottom of the hole) against a punch held in a vise to hold it open while you blast/brush the interior with degreaser/cleaner.

Its not too often that you will find all parts as a complete kit, so chances are that you will need to get them a piece or two at a time. You can find other ebay vendors who will ship to Canada. Other possibilities include Marstar and Numrich as well as the EE.

I realize that, but there apparently is a company out there making these parts. Then again, from the look of the parts the parkerizing on them is quite light in colour and would look a bit funny with blued parts and/or dark parking.

So after going through this thread on a back shift I have ordered 2 receivers, and contacted Consantine for 2 bolts. Is there anyone out there who can help me install the barrels and head space the bolts properly? I am looking at one in 3006 and the other in 308. Next bit of parts will be the op rod if I can source one.

Here's an idea, would anyone be interested in splitting the cost of a barrel vice and reamer? If we could get a bunch of people together it would be cheap and as soon as you're done with it you could ship it to the next guy on the list?

If you're interested shoot me a pm and I will look into it a bit more in depth if there's enough interest.
