The Moose Thread (As Canadian as it gets)

I got my little bull yesterday. Had the boy with me. He's 12 and just got his hunter safety but he didn't get drawn for moose. Not a monster by any means but will fill the freezer and that's what we were after. Dressed out 468 lbs. worked out nice, only 5 miles as the crow flies from home. We went home and drove out with the tractor and scooped him up. It doesn't get any easier than that.

Called this one in just over a week ago, second morning of calling the same spot. Shot him from around 46yds, blr with a 400gr hawk over 50gr IMR 3031. 2" entrance hole right through the sternum. Boned him out on the spot, we figure awfully close to 500lbs of meat off of him. So far moose hamburgers, roast and jerky (almost out of jerky already 
going to make more next week and maybe a small batch of sausage). Moosy joes for supper tonight.
Lot's of guys concentrate on the horns, I focus on how wide his ass is. mmmmmmmmmmm moose roast, drooool. I would have been just as happy had he 5" spikes, but I'll keep the horns.

Great harvest Suka..... and your pic of your bull laying on it's side as you would have walked up to it makes my heart beat faster.... It is always an amazing feeling when you walk up close to a moose you just downed and get that reminder of just how big they really are.....

Nice Moose Suka!
I got my meat from the butcher on this year's bull, and it came out at 750lbs of cut and wrapped meat. Thankfully, we split it three ways. The only thing that shows up a good Moose is a Bison for weight, put in for that Zama draw!

Thanks guys. He came in right away on the second morning but while could hear him walking couldn't see him. Waited about an hour then walked about a half mile away and cow called as I walked back to the decoy then raked some brush and gave 3 bull grunts. Not sure which brought him back.
This one came in just like in the movies, moving his head side to side, stopping to rake willows, the whole show. Pretty humbling to watch such a majestic animal like that. Came in without making a single sound.
We actually started boning out on the spot as where we hunt deer locally it's strictly walk in drag out, as I got older I finally figured out there's no point in packing out the bones(plus as I get older I simply cannot pack the weight I used to, despite still thinking I can). It helps that wife get's right in there, she's gotten very good at boning things like the scapula's, more patience and likely a better eye for that than myself.
In AB we have to have proof of ### and the tag on the same back leg so we just leave that whole, it was about all I could do to pack that out.
We got a measured 80lbs of meat off that leg.
Here's a pic of the back leg with the major muscle groups from the thigh seperated and ready to cut into roasts. The calf muscle we make into jerky or trim for hamburger.
Wife busy at work. Took us about 4 hrs to bone it out and pack the gamebags back to the argo.

I've never boned out a Moose but 4 hrs between your wife and you seems pretty damn good to me. My friend and I took about half that just to gut, skin, and quarter, and that's much less work.

Like anything else you tend to develop a rhythm between the two of us. Each just starts on their part and it goes pretty quickly, we just break the big jog into small jobs and complete them one at a time. This was the first moose we boned on the spot but have done quite a few deer the last few years. The first deer we did likely took almost as long. It also helped we were able to get the argo to within about 50yds of the site.
Plus it helps that wife and I work well together.

750 lbs cut and wrapped?! That's a big bull. Was that including pork added to sausage, etc?

We didn't do sausage, beef fat was added to the burger, but that wouldn't amount to more than 20lbs. So indeed he was a monster, the cutter was taken aback when the quarters showed up and he sees a lot of big moose.
